New wheels upgrade - what about the spare?
Hi guys,
When you upgrade your wheels in either a different shape or size, how many buy 1 extra as a spare so they all match? And when they are different sizes - as in the staggered Sport packages, which spare do you buy? I didn't purchase an additional 18" rim and tire for the spare. I use the 16" spare that came with the car, but put on the Conti Extreme Contact tire. I figure I won't travel on it that much till I get the flat fixed. Kevin |

The rims size of the spare is not an issue in this case since you are going to use the AMG rims. The issue that you have to worry about is the tire height. I know that the setup SL500 16" stock(225/55/16 at 25.74 inches tall) has almost the same tire height as 17"AMG(245/45/17 at 25.68 inches tall)and the 18" AMG(245/40/18 - 275/35/18 at 25.72 inches tall). As for the stagger setup you will not have any effect becasue you will essentally be adding a different stagger(225 245 275) with the spare.
Another thing is that if you try to put a 17" or 18" inch spare in the trunk with the 245 or 275 setup your trunk mat will not sit flat as it does now. |

Nobody bothers buying 5. When you specify upgraded wheels ex-works, even MB does not supply a matching spare. Keep your speed under 50mph when using the spare and you won't have a problem. The ESP knows what's up.
If you must have a matching spare, and you have a staggered set up, buy the narrower rim as a spare (the front rim). The narrow front rim will fit at the front and the back; the wider rear rim only fits at the back: get a punctured front and you're stuffed if your spare is the wide rear.

Wise replies. Seems obvious now!

Found this pic on an eBay car, a 2000 SL500. It looks suspiciously like a specialist spare. Is it?

My 1999 SL500 has exactly the same spare wheel and tyre. The tyre is the same size as the tyres on the car (245/45 R17 at all four corners) and there doesn't appear to be anything special about the wheel. I guess it is cheaper than fitting a regular spare. I also think you'd have this spare if you spec'd the car ex-works with 18" wheels, but you'd have to keep it to 50mph in use.

I always get five rims if I can. Most places sell only a set of four, but if there is a fifth available I buy it (usually against the shop's advice!).
Reason is that it becomes a spare in more ways than one if that rim goes out of production and I damage one. It is also cosmetically nicer if it needs to be use. At the next tyre change, I'll then select the best of the outgoing four as a spare, which also ensures regular spare "change". This only applies if all four rims are the same.
