calipers fixed?

Well I picked up the car -- they replaced the front calipers -- but all was not right -- too much travel in the brakes - normally it was very tight. I hope it is air in the system - but I bet somethng happened to the master cylinder in all the cleaning/flushing.

In the driving I did with it I at least found out that the front end is actually still very tight -- the drift was caused by the sticking caliper. But with the some boots torn it is just a matter of time - but the dealer said that with only a few thousand miles a year it could take a while

I was wondering about the front springs - If I do all of the front end work -- should I just change out the springs - MB says they do not replace many of them - I did not check the price yet. If I remember, you must measure a spring out of the car -- correct?

It's not common to replace the spring at all. Basicallly, only if the spring breaks or the car is squatting. The stock spring is only one size, but there are different size pads that sit between the spring and the upper mount.

Calipers!

Gotta tell you that I had a real problem with Calipers. Much to my surprise, I replaced them twice within a year. Actually three times. Finally the guy who now fixes my 560SL replaced the Calipers with MB rebuilt Calipers. Seems aftermarket stuff was not holding up. I can't say for sure but check out the Mfg. on your Calipers before you go throwing money at the problem!

My 2cents!

I would be interested to know who rebuilt your calipers. I just replaced three (one front DEFINITELY frozen, two rear were very bad looking) and I got them from Advance, Cardone was the rebuilder. One initial irritant was that the good MB bleeder valves made of brass were replaced with cheap-a$$ aluminum and plastic garbage. The calipers were sent in loose-fitting boxes, and one of the aluminum bleeders was bent. I didn't notice it until I was bleeding the brakes - on my initial bleeding attempt it snapped it in half while I was loosening the brakes, requiring an ez-out to remove it. I looked on the 'net and Cardone has ISO, etc up the yin-yang, but we'll see. Couldn't argue with the price.

Calipers

You might send an e-mail to GillyBenzTech or Donnie Drummond on this site or some of the other guys here who really know this stuff. I have received some very very good info from watching this board and asking questions.

I would recommend that you search the board when you need a repair of any type. I was burned pretty badly due to my knowledge level on this 560. This is the finest car I have ever owned. I was a BMW guy till I bought this car. I'm weird, in as much as I wouldn't buy a new MB. I am not sold on the quality vs. price since thay were bought.

Can't say who rebuilt the Calipers. One thing I will say is that saving money in this area is a mistake. My problem was passenger side frozen Caliper. As i said three times in one year!

I have had exactly the opposite experience with the Cardone calipers in my SL. After a thousand miles or so, they are doing fine. There was a pretty good debate on this subject on the Vintage Forum, where we all are basically trying to keep marginal cars on the road at a reasonable cost.

If you had three different calipers on the same wheel freeze, then there had to be some other problem like bad fluid or a bad hose?

I want to make clear that I changed out three out of four of my calipers (ran out of money, the LF caliper was OK, but still, 18 years old...) with the Cardone rebuilts-not the same one three times. I tried them out tonight and they seem fine. I screwed up the parking brake adjustment, but, this was the first major brake job I've done in 20 years....

My brake fluid was like milk with rust in it (it isn't anymore-flushed it as best I could and put in some DOT4).

The dealer flushed the brake fluid again -- all is back to normal.

I just hope that the extended travel that the master cyl went through did not do any damage to the seals!

I still notice a slight movement in the front end -- but it is very minor!

but it looks like I am going to plan on a front end rebuild in the future!
