Question 90 500SL Need help with hardtop install problem

Guys, after enjoying my car with top off for a few weeks, I decided to reinstall the hardtop. My problem is the top switch light does not go out. I double and triple checked all the latches, and also tried manually locking all four corners, but still the light stays on.

Any suggestions on what to try next?

I know that the latches on top of the windshield are weak because I have to manually lock them when I put the softtop up.

When I try to latch the hardtop using the switch, the rear latches are fine, then the front latches balk. At that point, I use my top tool to manually lock the front latches. All 4 locks seem to be in place, but the light remains on.

TIA,

Warren

If you poll the soft top controller for diagnostic codes, I believe it will tell you precisely why your light is on. All you need is a short wire or paper clip. If you do a search you will find the procedure. If you report the codes here, I will interpret them for you.

Not too smart

I almost don't want to post this but for what it's worth... I just took my hard top off in the MA spring (for the one day it didn't rain) and then I wished to reinstall it. I put it on and did my usual ceramony and forgot the defrost wire YIKES!! It was caught under the hard top and after several STUPID attempts I got the top to close, crushing the defrost connector. THE LIGHT FLASHED because the cover didn't completely close... (don't tell anyone)
