Where to get rear shelf for 560?

I am planning on putting some rear speakers in my 88 560sl but I do not want to cut up the original rear shelf behind the front seats. Does anyone know where to buy just the rear seat shelf? I can only find it as an entire carpet set for over $500 which I do not need nor do I care to spend that much.
What I anticipate is cutting out speaker holes, placing the speakers in the easily removable shelf and wiring them with quick connectors. That way I can simply remove the whole shelf, speakers and all, and slide back in the original shelf whenever I want without any hassle.

I think some suppliers will sell you a piece of a carpeting set, ask; someone mentioned this before.

On the shelf, I don't know if heat, age, or what caused this, or if it was this bad in the first place, but that wood pressboard is the cheapest piece of cr** I have ever seen; when I cut my speaker holes (slightly larger, they were there already) with a jigsaw it disintegrated the wood more than it cut. Seriously, maybe this is a safety feature - the wood disintigrates on impact instead of becoming a projectile? My $0.02, I'd cut another piece out of better wood. If I get in an accident and survive I'll probably be suicidal (my fault) or in prison (their fault!).

Recommend you do as another poster here suggested...which I also did. Buy some speakers and speaker boxes and just sit on the shelf or seat, whichever you have.

FYI, I found some good speaker boxes and Pioneer speakers at http://www.etronics.com.

When I want to use the back seat for grandkids, luggage, etc., I just disconnect the speakers and store them or put them in the trunk.

Wish I could remember who made this suggestion so I could give appropriate credit, but I can't.

Thanks for your input. I guess it will be overall less expensive and less hassle to put boxes in the rear than permanent mounts. I went to a carpet store hoping to match the carpet and just make my own shelf but they want $72.00 just for the carpet.

MB carpet is not cheap. I got some out of California for $55.00 a square yard. In fact, there's not much at all about these cars that are cheap. ha!

Here's a link to a speaker enclosure that's similiar to what I got off of this site. This one looks like it might tip over pretty easy since it's only 4" deep. MIne are more triangular with a wider base, but I couldn't find them on the site again. Mine are the same brand name as these so you might find others elsewhere by doing a different search. However, I highly recommend etronics for the speakers. Prices seem to be pretty good.

Crutchfield's has a 6 x 9 box for $30.00, the QLogic QL-69W that has a 7 inch base. I am considering the Sony XS-V6950 H 6x9 speakers (4 way) from etronics. Undecided on front speakers.
Also want to update my radio, have the original Becker Grand Prix. Would like to keep it German but the Pioneer DEH-P 4600MP has a lot more going for it at the price ($180) than a comparable Blauplunkt.

I went with Pioneer both front and rear. Went out to see if I could tell what I have. Couldn't with the rear, but still had the box for the front. They are Pioneer TS-A1057. Here's the link for them. Sound quality is good all the way around.

Over the years I have found that the best way to go is to just cut 6.5 speakers in the rear shelf. The OE system is just so bad that it is not worth keeping. If you put in speaker boxes they must be mounted for saftey and the holes will also show if removed.

The wood panel is just that a panel -- you can get the carpet from a few places if you really wanted to fix it. I have also seen some junked cars that the carpet was still OK.

This is one of those thing I do not get -- the 560sl is a great car but it is not some rare thing that would stop me from cutting a very easy to replace panel. I have never replaced any that I did before I sold them -- and it was never an issue!

Back in 1994, I purchased the rear shelf assy with the speakers built-in firing forward. I think it was in the $2-300 range as I recall.
