SL500 1993 Sound System

I have ripped out the old cassette holder and now have a square hole that is silver lined with the light bulb dangling on the bottom(actually I have tucked this away). The Mercedes drink holder is not compatible for this model.
Has anyone had the same problem and actually found something to fit.

Also,
I am about to replace the sound system and considering a new Clarion 745 deck (as it is one of the few decks that is black and will match), front and rear speakers with sub woofers. Am I correct in assuming that the only place to install the rear 6 inch speakers is in the storage compartments behind the 2 seats? This means cutting a hole in the lids of both compartments. Has anyone upgraded their SL sound system and can confirm this is the best place and also advise where they installed the sub woofer.

ps - thanks to the members who recently suggested how I can replace the broken vanity mirrors in the sun visors (I have ordered from MC Canada direct).

Thanks very much.

The drink holders from a '96 and newer 129 will work with your car. But you have to substitute the assembly of storage compartment with drink holders for your present assembly of cassette storage and ashtray and lighter. Probably ridiculously expensive to purchase from the dealer, but you might find something used.

Horatio, I picked up the MB replacement from Phil here at Mercedes Shop for 24 bucks (US). Expensive, but it does fit nicely.

Where in the Caribean are you, he might be able to ship it.

SL500

I was in touch with Phil and he informed me that the drink holder would not fit this year/model.
I am not sure what MB replacement for $24 KLK refers to that he purchased from Phil as Phil did not suggest any alternative.
I am presently in Canada on vacation and could have the part shipped to me here or in WA if it is suitable.
I have managed to pick up some parts locally from the MB dealer here(actaully they brought in from Germany for me. at a lower price than if bought in the USA which I thought was strange).

Here's the part number from Phil.

It is not a cupholder, just a compartment. Rather than that empty hole.

129 680 09 91 Cassette to map box

Give hime a yell, he may have thought you were looking for a cupholder only.

cup holder

I have two of the cup holders for the cassette holder in my 1993 500SL. They work beautifully....and when you don't want them in there, just take them out and store them in the center compartment. You still have holders for several tapes!

I have some pics of my custom stereo install in my '91 300SL.

Head Unit is an Alpine CDA-7897 cd/mp3 foldout face also with a alpine 6disc mp3 changer. Amplifier I had a Zapco 6 channel. Speakers are all Diamond Audio, 6.5"/4.5"/1" three way up front and two 10" subs right behind the seats and still have room to store stuff back there too. All wired together with Zapco symbilink system (no RCA's and zero distortion).

it's soo clean and loud that I can't hear the wind when i'm driving!!

I've got some pics of it here.
