There is a difference between somebody parting a car in their spare time to save good parts from the crusher, help other MB shop members, and maybe make a little money for their MB hobby, and somebody who is parting cars for a living. One belongs on this forum and one does not.

So far I've found people here to be very helpful and quite generous with their time, knowledge, and parts. I guess nothing is perfect, but this forum is pretty damn good. I do agree with you, though. For most of us this is a hobby and we have limited funds to pursue it, so it's nice if we can help each other without feeling the need to make as much as we can in the process.

You might have listed on Ebay for a higher starting bid, $12.99 was way to low. Sometimes you can get a great deal on Ebay, but other times the parts are way way overpriced.

On the other hand I also have common parts that will sell quickly like damper accumulators. There is alot of competition driving the cost down on those making them a good deal by default. The other point is that I paid $8300 for the parts car which I purchased soaly for the engine and transmission. I don't plan on giving it away. It's not like someone comes to my house with a pickup truck every night and says I will take those two doors the top and the entire interior. Selling this stuff is a pain in the butt. Letting people know you have it is that work. The fact that you can find stuff here that people have lying around in the way at a low price is good. But it is also good that you can find a used component that you need at any price at all.

i do realizing that I'm not going to retire off of my parts sales, but they do need to help bring in enough to pay for the Benz habit. I also hate to send a perfectly good part to the landfill. If someone needs it and makes a reasonable offer, its theirs. I purchased a parts car (to me at least) for the 5 spd trans and other bits. All else is excess and available for sale. I do see prices increasing as my wife said I could buy a C63AMG from the part proceeds

I got started buy wining my car on Ebay. It needed parts and expertise to get it on the road. I didn't have time or even a car to go about every junkyard looking for parts nor did I want too but new parts for retail at dealer on a 35 year old benz I bought for 300 dollars not a good idea. But today I am driving the car because of the help of members of this board both in knowledge and also in supplying me parts I needed. I never once got ripped off or felt I did. I bought some stuff from ebay that were wrong for my car and I listed them here for shipping cost to help other's out. I now have my car running I have been to three local junkyards and not a single w123 and only one w124. IMO nobody is forcing anyone to buy anything. If you have a nice item you got from a buddy for helping him out with some repair and you have no "money" in it, but you think it's work $X. I don't think it be wrong to list it for $X. Someone may think it's a real good buy for them. Bottomline if the seller wants market price so be it, someone may be happy to pay for it. On the other hand if anyone want's to help me out with a good/fair driver's side floorpan from a w123 coupe at this point I take a any good driver's side w123 floorpan but keep in mind I paid $300 for the whole car. Send me a PM. Of course the rusted floor was not mentioned in the Ebay auction where I won the car.

I am trying to part out my 81 300SD. I am finding it hard to price things that are on the car. I know what I paid for replacements and can price thse things accordingly. I know what I got at the JY as spares and post those for cost. The other parts I either have to go to ebay to see what they sell for on the open market then take say 20 percent off for my friends on the forum or just pull a number out of my butt. I have sold $15 taillights and $5 accelerator linkages, but I would like to defray as much of the cost of the SDL as possible. I don't think that is a crime, do you?
Check out the parts list over on the "parts" forum. Joe

Pricing Parts
I think it is up to the seller to price their parts... Low or high does not matter because the buyer has the right to either buy or not to buy. Some people want the parts free and others are willing to pay for them.

I started parting out a wagon this past winter. To me I love the wagons, they are a rare breed in my book and the parts are valuable. Its a hobby I love. Just pulling out the rear quarter glass was a blast. This is the first Benz I've stripped and its amazing how its built, Off track, anyways... It was getting frustrating to me dealing with some people on the forum and I have much experience with Ebay so the parts went on Ebay. Maybe more money in the end, maybe not, I don't really care, but one thing for sure for me it was easier. That said I helped many forum people out and they seemed very happy with the purchases. Recenty I purchased some parts from a member and it was really nice to get parts for a fair price.
Life will go on as we know it if there are dealers in here. Like T.V., don't like it change the channel. Price to high, don't buy it.

I am middle of the road.
I have been given parts, and have bought many off of e-bay. I think that those who do this to make a buck, and keep the price reasonable, provide a good service. I only have issues if someone is dishonest, and does not send a part as promised. I felt it was a good vaule, or I would not have bought it. On the ford forum I visit, I have given away many things. Also made a buck on a couple. It is my hobby at times. At times I envy those who can make a profit on their hobby.

Since there is no seller rating on this forum, perhaps this thread could become an ongoing 'whitelist' for positive buying experiences?
Here's mine so far; very helpful and reasonably priced. jim16671836 |

My time has value....
I have cars in the back field that I harvest parts off of for ebay when I have the time. It's a way to keep from throwing out something I feel has a use for someone, or I already have a spare, or two.
What really irritates me, is when someone on this forum posts a need for a part. I spend the time to locate, remove, clean, test, weigh, package and give a price quote for the part and shipping, and then I get no response back from the person wanting the part. Zippo, nada, nicht. What a waste of my time. You know, my time is valuable. I'm a senior engineer at a naval shipyard. I've got all the OT I can stand at work, and I sure can't make a fraction of that pulling parts. Not to mention the time and cost involved in seeking out and bringing a car home. It's not cheap to drive out to pick up a wreck, load it, bring it home and spend the time to pull and check out the part. Plus, I have to pay for the infrastructure (i.e.: property taxes) that allows me to store the cars. I try to help out, but half the inquiries are a complete waste of my time. At least on eBay, I have pretty good chance of selling the part for a minimum hassle and risk. Think about it, guys, when you ask for a part, we're not professional parts guys here, we have day jobs, families, and are doing this for the good of the hobby. I'm more than happy to help people out, but I really do not have the time to waste on a person who is not willing to hold up their end or the deal. If you post a need, and I respond, please realize that I have invested quite a bit of time just to answer your inquiry. I do my best not price the item too high, the price reflects either the rarity of the part, or the level of effort to get it in a postable condition. I'm not looking to get rich off any of the parts, but I do need to look at my investment and the cost of my time. OK, rant off. I enjoy helping, but I'm frustrated with dead ends as well. BTW, I offer a money back deal, no questions asked, my eBay moniker has 100% feedback, and over 700 responses..... Jim
