107 Shifter Position Indicator Needed
Detailing project gone bad: Removed the center console to retrieve the shift position strip (black strip with P, R, N, D, etc. painted on it). The plastic cover had cracked, split and both had fallen below. Well it got a little dirty under there, and so I took it in clean before replacing. One spritz with 409 cleaner and the paint came off in an instant. So now it's ruined.
Anybody have the strip and the plastic cover that protects it that they can spare? I'll try the dealer tomorrow, but I certainly don't see it on allparts express or fastlane.... Thanks in advance. Stu PS - there were also some fragments of a black plastic clip or something down there. Might have been part of the hazard/directional relay connector (I found the bottom side of said relay taped up with electrical tape). The window switches seemed fine. Any ideas? These are both efforts of taking a very nice, but by no means pristine 79 450 SL back to some of its past elegance through some TLC....thanks to anyone who can help.

I look in my parts boxes, seems like I might have it . All the switches on that console have tabs that hold them in place, probably bits of old ones or ones that are there

As an aside...I was happy to figure out with no head scratching whatsoever, how to remove the nice wood center console assembly that houses the shifter, hazard flasher and window switches. Pulled out the ashtray and saw that the console extended underneath, so I removed the ashtray housing, and found two little screws countersunk into the trim. There's a pin on the aft end of the console trim that slides into a hole to hold the back side down.Remove the screws by the ashtray and the trim slides back and then the whole thing lifts up. No need to remove the shifter, nothing. Nice.
BUT - of course - i get the whole thing out, and the socket for the aforementioned pin is ripped upwards. Some previous owner apparently went at this or some related project with a pry bar instead of a brain! Swinging by the dealer now....

OK - the dealer only sells the shifter base (with the labels included). That part is over $200 so I would be very reluctant to go for that.
Ron if you spot one it would be great. Also, driving in the sun, I got a better glimpse of the (now empty) track where these two strips go. I am afraid that the black plastic fragments I found underneath the assembly were from the shifter base and are probably the one of the clips or supports to hold the mylar strip and plastic cover up (the other seems OK) ....So in a perfect world, I would buy that new base. However, if anyone finds a whole base in reasonably good condition, I would entertain buying it here rather than pay to the dealer. Otherwise, I can probably rig a repair underneath my existing one that would be perfectly acceptable. Thanks in advance. S
