WTB: W123 TDT Roof Rack Cross Bars for A Surfer

Desperate surfer in need of a pair of roof rack cross bars. Preferred to be in nice condition with no cracks, but will consider all options. Willing to pay market value plus some if its the right set!

I don’t want them just to be cool, I will actually use these for a proper function!

Tired of putting my 9’0” inside the wagon!!!

Shoot me a PM or just reply

I've found that a couple of pieces of bamboo work well!

Clarification needed. Are you talking about the Mercedes OEM chrome bars that go between the fore/aft roof rails? If so, those chrome cross bars are ABSOLUTELY NOT intended to support wieght. Their purpose is to "contain" stuff that you have put on the rubber strips on top of the wagon. Such as a cargo box or something. You can't use them to support surfboards, you need something aftermarket for that.

Hmm I understand your point. My 82’ did not come with the rubber strips that I have seen on later models. You feel that a 15 lb. surfboard will be too excessive?

I don't have an opinion on that. I just know that the intended use is to contain things that are supported on the roof. But on a related note, how much pressure up and down will a surfboard generate when you are driving 60 mph? I assume wind and surfboards is sort of like an airplane wing and it's either going to lift or push down or both... The side rails can support things. You might want to fabricate something. Also leaving those nice chrome rails on the roof is a minor theft temptation. They don't lock and they are pretty rare. I stow my rails under the 2nd row seat and only use them when I'm on long-range junk trips in case i need to carry stuff on the roof...

I did a 2nd row headrest delete on my wagon specifically because my rear seats are 90% of the time folded down and those damn headrests get in the way. Usually the seat bottoms aren't in the car either as they just take up space. So I would only have to recline the passenger front seat and remove it's headrest to accommodate your surfboard... (That is how you are taking your surfboard isn't it - front to back on the right side of the car?) If you are doing something wonky that involves the board going between the two front seats I could imagine that getting quite tiring...

Finally someone that doesn’t have an opinion on everything! Respect.

The board typically stays in its board bag. So aerodynamic qualities that it has off the water won’t be in effect very much. Also if I am going to hope on the freeway to go somewhere far, I would put it in the car to be safe.

Luckily my wagon doesn’t have those 2nd seat headrests. I feel they would get in the way anyways when looking over the shoulder to merge.

I have been having to fold down both the rear seats, (board is too wide to go through the 40 split) and the passenger seat to stick my stick in. Also coming off the water the board is wet, and I really don’t want to put it in the car.

I guess I would want to experiment with a crappy OEM set and see how it goes, and then get a nice set if it works. If the board comes loose, you have a pretty serious liability issue on your hands. I think other surfers should chime in since I a) have the rubber strips and b) don't surf.

Nice. That looks alright. If it ends up they really are not going to do the job well, I suppose I’ll go that route.

Bamboo! Tied to the side bars, board strapped to the side bars, 70 mph for 2hrs no problem. Cost? $0.00
