Is it ok to run 14 x 6 in front and 14 x 6.5 in the rear? They are the regular bundt cake type wheels.

Should be ok if you run same size tire on all four like a 205/70. Some states that may be illegal, but I doubt anyone would notice.

I've done it of thousands of miles with no problems. I don't use the same size tires either. Look at all the sport and race cars that use larger tires on the rear.

I think the original size tires 185R80X14 that come on a 300SD are too small for that weight car. Much smaller and lighter American cars use that size. 205R70X14 is a good replacement because the speedo and odometer are both correct. I use 205R70X14 on the rear but anything else I have on the front.

PEH, thanks. Putting snows on the back of my 300D. Kind of grim even thinking about this already but the car is about the worst I've ever driven in snow. Damn turbo kicks in, tires break loose. Snows aught to help a little.

PEH I was refering to mismatching in the side to side mode, some southern state's use to not care.

Original on 300D 123 with 14's were either 195/70 standard and some 205/70's on the 6 or 6.5 rim's. 300D didn't come with 5.5 rims. Also a lot of dealers did tire and wheel swap's back then to larger tires and the Bunt's for the customers. The 240D was the only 123 car that came with 5.5 rims and 175 series tires. A lot of 240's I am told got the hand me downs from 300's at the dealers, then there were the gray market cars and anything could be on some those cars depending on what part of the world they were coming from.

I put snows all the way around on mine in the winter with 100 lbs. of sand in the trunk.

With that setup, I'm doing better than most in deep snow and slippery snow.

I've gone with the big bite (old style) snows from Sam's Club. Stinkin $204 out the door (for 4). I then leave them on the second set of rims. I'm now on my third year with two of the sets and they look very good yet.

Note that I have a huge 1/4 mile hill that leads to our house. This hill use to strand my minivan, etc but has never stranded our MB's with this setup.

I have 16 snows that sit in my shed on secondary rims just waiting for the white stuff to fly. Need to get one more for my son's car as this will be his first winter.

My '80 300SD came with 180R80X14 tires. Even had a tag on the door frame stating that that was original size. Speedo and odo were right on with the 185R80 tires, Also right on with the 205R70 tires. Checked it once out west with road mile markers for 400 miles. Odometer read 400.6 miles. Can't get much closer than that.

I've even run a size different on the front side to side and couldn't tell the difference but I never run different size on rear side to side. Always put the larger size on the right side because road is usually lower on right side.

All I can say is manual, MB Tech Data Passenger Cars April '85, says all US 300's had 195's, but manual could be wrong or you have a gray market car.

I sold a bunch of the gray market VW's in late '60's at a VW dealer in LA, those cars had some options (color's is one) that didn't come with US car's and if equipted same way we could sell them cheaper then regular US import cars. These cars were everything from new cars shipped from other countries after being resold for US import, some were referbished used cars, rebuilt euro wrecks and stolen car's in Europe that got shipped to US market. Same happened with MB and BMW car's.

The dealership I worked at was not an authorized VW dealer and I worked there only long enouth to realize that this was not where I wanted to work. Went to Vic Petimkan(sp) Chevy on Hollywood Blvd from there. Working on the Bvld was a trip, sold an L88 Corvette to the guy who played the strong man on Mission Impossible. Would you believe Boris Karloff was a reagular customer and would bring his '63 Byscane(sp) 4dr in for service and wait for the car. I got to talk with him on a couple of ocassions.

A lot of cars run different size tires front and back, my freinds car has 18in AMG monoblocks. I don't remember the exact size's but the rears are wider by a lot (I think like 285 vs 245) and have a smaller side wall(35-40) than the fronts, the outside's are the same diameter. I wouldn't run tires that are differant diameters that could cause problems.

PEH, I've got two. They both start well in the winter with block heaters. One's a coupe, one's a sedan. The coupe got used last winter but I want to use the sedan this winter. Sedan's got a nasty noise up front that I have to fix before it gets cold.

If the rims are part of two sets such as regular and snow season (what's that ), then I assume the you are asking about the second set for snow season (again, what's that ). You may want to mark one pair (either the 6s or the 6.5s) on the inside with some paint or something similar so that you make sure to keep that pair on the same axle each year when you change. After a few years, you may forget and end up with a 6.5 and 6 on each axle (not recommended).

Semi-but not really-related: Any of you guys ever seen the OEM Uniroyal tires these cars came with? Very aggressive tread pattern, darn near a light truck looking tire. I always thought that was interisting..

Yes, mine came with one of the original tire's as a spare, rather dry rotted. It was a 195/70/14 Uniroyal with a very aggressive sports type tread pattern, it looked like it might have had 1/2 to 3/4's of it's tread still on the tire.
