Have 2 pairs of slightly different tires, can I put matching pairs side to side?

I bought from the junkyard 2 pairs of like new Michelin tires all the same size but 2 are Pilot’s and the other 2 are MXV’s. Is there any problem if I put one matching pair on the right side of the car and the other on the left instead of putting matching pairs on each axle? I want to mount them this way for appearance sake so the car looks uniform when looking at it from the side.

i think that would throw of your steering a bit.

Its a better bet to run matched tyres per axle.

Not to mention the different wear rates will play havok with your alignment.. In all things wheels/tires/axles/brakes, you want to keep the left and right side of each axle as similar humanly possible. The appearance won't be bad, its not like one is a whitewall or anything.

peace,
sam

They all have the same exact 400 treadwear rating, they all have the same tread wear and they are all the same size so have the same contact patch on the road. So what would be the big deal?

Well, you can do it if you want, but its not recommended. The treadwear rating is an approximation, and they have different traction characteristics, both dry and wet. If they really had identical behavior, they'd be, well, the same tire.

Its not a life or death thing, your car won't blow up if you do it, or immediately crash or anything, but you need to choose whether you want your car to look a tiny bit better, or whether you want optimum handling, safety, and reliability. The choice, as always, is yours.

peace,
sam

PS One benefit of having different tires on the front and back is that if someone points it out you can make up a story like, "Well, I felt like I was getting too much oversteer while making tight turns at breaking speed, so I decided to go to a slightly different compound and tread profile on the front to delay lockup by a few more degrees. Its really helped." So you see, the best choice for the car also turns into a cool story to make people think you are some pro racer or something. Thats what I would do.

two different pairs of tires is dangerous...it leads to handling problems as one end of the car responds to driver input different than the other end...

I would sell the tires and buy a complete matching set.

I would think that if theyre like new, they were on a car worth putting good tires on... and unless that car suddenly tossed a rod, i would think it was hit... Not a good thing i dont think, for having a tire thats been crushed

Anyways im gone for a few days, so if im wrong, i wont be able to learn from this untill tues?

take care
