722.6 ML320 Transmission replace gilly help!
I have a 2000 ml320 that I bought wrecked in the front with only 6K miles on it. I got a great deal and replaced the front cap and now my wife has been driving it. We have 36K miles on it now and it went into limp home mode. I took it to the dealer here in north houston thinking that only a sensor had gone bad causing this. The dealer tells me 6700.00 to replace the transmission and the trans controller, it is shot. She said that the adaptive has done all it can becuase the transmission has been slipping and the memory is full so the brain has to be replaced as well.. We never really noticed it slipping, occasionally 4 or 5 times when putting into reverse it would still be in nuetral then after a minute it would go into reverse. This only happened a few times. Am I being taken? I have a friend that has a wreking yard in FLA, He is selling me a 02 trans with only 2k on it for 1400.00 and my brother in law haqs a shop and will do the installation. What else will I have to do besides having this new trans installed. Do I need a new brain, programming, I don't want to get too burned.

36K is a very early failure for a 722.6. I would want to see a print-out of the adaptation figures from the trans computer!
Maximun torque figures for a V-6 engine is 180nm. You don't need to program any computer if it is from a LIKE vehicle.

I will ask for the printout this morning and also a copy of the estimate. I figured that if you diconnect the battery the memory to the computer would be cleared, so why would you have to have a new computer as well. This was my fist clue that maybe something is fishy. I will post the printout today.

I'd base almost 100% of a transmission replacement diagnosis on what's in the bottom of the oil pan. I have an earlier post about this topic.
No you can't just "shut off" the limp home mode......if it were only that easy! Why do you think that limp home exists? Why would they have this feature if you could simply "turn it off"? Going by the codes I'd more lean towards a bad solenoid, but I would think the place that looked at it would have mentioned that. But both of the codes are essentially the same, just 1 is sporadic and one is a current code, but the same fault really. You could try finding the bad solenoid, but another possiblity is a bad conductor plate, they were still having problems with the conductor plates in 2000. Sometimes when replacing the transmission (if it comes to that) MB recommends a new ETC (control unit, or as YOU like to say the "brain"), but the persons logic that "the 'brain' is full" is a bunch of hooey, I don't know if I'm likin' what this guy has to say at all in regards to this problem. Doesn't sound very well versed in transmissions in general and the 722.6 in particular. I'll have to dig out a book to analyze the adaptation values, ain't happenin' tonight anymore, possibly tomoorow. I'd proceed with caution with this clown....... Gilly

UPdate on transmission. Bad mercedes transfer case!!
I have an update on my ML320. We pulled the tranmission last week and found that the transfer case is cracked as well. Total loss on the transfer case. Come to find out that 98 to 2000 had a bad chaiin in the transfer case but mercedes won't tell anyone about this beucase they don't want to warranty it. They updated the chain in 2001 models. The wrecking yard told me they had 180 of these lying around for a year or so and then they started flying off the shelves. This is how I found out about it. I did find a transfer case from a 2003 for $700. I assume it has the new chain in it. Mercedes, for what they charge should really step up to the plate on these issues instead of being so cheap. I also bought a rack and pinion because mine was leaking like a busted pipe. I will never buy another mercedes after this. I just went out and paid 33K yesterday for new ford F150 supercrew 4x4 for myself. When the ml320 is finished I will decide how bad my wife likes it before I unload this 35K mile piece of ****. I do want to thank Gilly and the people of this forum for the support. I will do the swap this weekend and post a final thread on the details of this adventure.
