The newer ones have the electric suction fan only, mounted behind the radiator. Yours has the engine (mechanical) fan and the aux fan set-up. I'd leave it alone, and why are you concerned with making your ML lighter, anyways?

Probably not feasable, not worth the effort certainly. The control system for the aux fan on yours is likely MUCH different than for this one "do it all" fan the 03's have.
The '03 fan is all the truck has for a fan, on the older ones you have the engine fan running whenever the engine is running, and the aux fan runs only when neccesary, so the control scheme would be way different on that suction fan. The suction fan WOULD maybe create some horsepower gain, since there is no engine (mechanical) fan running. Really the truck would need NO fan at all at highway speeds, the air blast is enough to do it all, so I can see there would be a performance benefit to the 03 system. I don't think there is an MB left that uses an engine fan (mechanically driven) any more.

You seemed concerned about shaving some weight off the truck. WHY?
