Leak at steering rack 'banjo bolt'
Hi,
I have a 2000 ML430 with 65k miles and just did a harmonic balacer replace (the rubber ring was partially out) along with the idler puller and tensioner, since the bearings clearly sounded rough on them
Right after the fixes, I saw oil - on my nice new driveway - and immediately thought s@#t, crankshaft oil seal's leaking.
But noooooo - the leak was from what I can only describe as an overgrown banjo bolt ( with 1634600066 inscribed on it) that was on the bottom of the steering rack. There were 2 of them, each with an oil line routed to the end of the rack. It was loose enough that I could crank it a bit by hand. Not having the right size inverse-torx socket, I used a plumbers wrench ( I know, I know) to temporarily snug it up.
I looked up alldata and they did not have any info on it, not even torque specs. Has anyone seen any issues with this ? Leaks in this area ? Also, what is the socket size and what should the torque be ?
thanks,
Nand
