what will cause the MAF sensor to trigger the CEL?

My gas mileage is way down and I suspect the MAF sensor. I have just a little warranty left so I'd like it to trigger the CEL & code for the MAF sensor failure. Any suggestions? (it will be inspected at the dealer so don't suggest physically damaging it!)
