Go on back to the Performance Paddock and click on the "edit" icon on your first post on that thread, then you can click the "delete" box and when you delete that first post, the whole thread will be gone, so take care of that please.
The first thing you want to do is decide what isn't working. 9 times out of 10 it's just the lower cushion that isn't heating, not the entire seat. It's fairly common on these for the cushion heater to fail. When you click on the seat heater switches, usually you can hear the relays under the seat faintly clicking on. If you cna't hear them, you can try feeling them instead, usually you need a second person to operate the switch for you, but given enough desparation you can turn it into a 1 man job. When testing to see if the whole seat is inop, be sure to have the engine running, the heaters draw alot of amps. Turn on both of the heater (left and right) so you can do a fair comparison. Then compare the bottom cushion temp to the backrest temp, and also compare left and right seats. Use the "high heat" position. I recommend doing this when the interior is cold, makes it alot more apparent what's going on. I'd say that because the indicator lights come on that it's not a fuse. if you can hear or feel the relays operating I'd say it's pretty well narrowed down to a pad. There are 2 relays under the seat, one is for "low" heat, the other is for "high" heat. Gilly

Gilly, How do you fix the seat pad?
My drivers side seat bottom does not heat up very well. Is a replacement required or is there some kind of repair that can be done? If replacement is necessary, what is the procedure?
Thanks. |

"Not heating up very well" isn't the usual complaint. Usually it's completely inop on the bottom cushion, either it works or it doesn't.
If that's what you mean, yes it requires replacement. You remove the seat (including disconnecting the seat belt anchor over on the "door" side of the seat). Try to find a suitable height work area, or else you can do it on the floor. Be sure to use some old blankets to set it on. Remove the trim on the front and sides of the seat (leave it all attached, don't try to seperate the 3 pieces of trim) That part is pretty easy, there are 1 or 2 screws on each side, and you'll see 3 silverish looking ones on the bottom lip of the front piece. It'll make it easier to do if you remove the seat belt buckle first. Then remove the 2 bolts on each side which attach the backrest to the bottom seat frame. Remove the wiring for the seat backrest adjustment and backrest heater. Then you remove the seatcover from the bottom cushion and remove the wiring for the cushion heater. On the earlier models the heater pad is glued down to the foam cushion. You can decide if you want to replace the foam cushion or carefully peel the heater pad off of the original and reuse it. Gilly

Is your car under warranty?
Those heating elements are not cheap, they are probably $500 for the set.. You can probably buy one from Ebay to save you money..
I believe it is not hard to replace, all you need to do is remove the seat, take it apart, the leather is only held down by hog rings which can be removed by a plier.. |

Gilly,
The bottom cushion on the passenger side of my 98 ml is inop. If the relays tested out ok (I think they are ok since the seat back is heating up like it should), is there a way just to remove the bottom cushion? without going through the whole nine yard? The passenger side did get use much, I am disappointed it failed so soon. |
