Steering Play After R/R Tie Rod End

Is the excessive amount of steering play normal, and safe, to drive after replacing a tie rod end? I used the same number of turns to put the new end on, but clearly it's out of aligmnment as has been mentioned here in other threads - just didn't expect the steering wheel play to be that much.
