Rough idle?

Hi

I guess when it rains, it pours. Having probs with my SL also, but hopefully someone here can help with this ML problem.

My 98 ML starts right up, and runs great when cold. When the engine gets above 80C, it idles rough. Throttle repsonse off-idle is perfect, and the ML runs great at all speeds, accelerates fine, etc. Fuel mileage does not seem to affected. Only at idle, when warm, and then only about 80% of the time, it runs real rough.

At first, no "check engine" light came on, so it didn't set a code. But now the check engine light comes on and stays on when the ignition switch is on. I have no idea how to pull a code, but based on the series of events, I would guess that whatever is causing the intermitent warm idle roughness eventually threw something else off-kilter, causing the check engine light to illuminate.

What can I check?

Rough Idle

Take it to AutoZone, Checker, or ADvance, and they will pull the code for free. no obligation. The book of generic codes is the same for all vehicles under OBD2, in effect since 1996, and they will look it up for you.

I am guessing a small vacuum leak.

I brought it to Advance Auto. They pulled the code, and as suspected, "EGR flow". I did a search here and found that these engines seem to plug up the EGR tube. Tomorrow I'll yank it off and see what's up. I'll also pull the EGR valve - its probably crudded up and needs a good cleaning. Hopefully, that will fix the problem. I'll let y'all know what I find.

Pulled the EGR valve today. There was carbon build up around the seat, plunger, and seat chamber. The valve could not close becuase it was so fouled up with build-up. Cleaned it all up with dentist's tools. The engine hasn't idled this nicely in a long time. I guess it has been getting worse over time and I simply didn't notice it.
All fixed - thanks for the advice!
