ML55 catylitic converter

the left side cat on the 02 ML55 gave up around 85K miles.
It's out of warranty now and the dealer wants 1950 to replace it !
Does anyone know of an aftermarket company who sells the cat for the 02 ML55 ? I tried a lot of shops, online as well but they don't. ML320 and 430 are available but not for the 55.
Any help would be appreciated.

Take it to a muffler shop and buy a high flow cat. Should be $200-300 for a decent set up with proper flow rate.

The cat should not have failed this soon. You might want to check the left bank of cylinders and make sure you don't have a misfire/rich running condition.

I tried calling but they all say they can only replace with the proper size/fittings. meaning aftermarket built to original factory specs.
Are you suggesting just welding the cat in the pipe ?

If you don't want to pay $1950, that's your only choice.

Yes , I'm telling you to have a decent exhaust shop fab one up for you.

The 5.5 l V8 (300hp) in your ML should have about the same flow / performance requirements as one of its american counterparts (Corvette, Mustang, etc) a decent exhaust shop can fab one with the proper flow rate and duty cycle for a fraction of the $2k, more like $200 or so.

As long as the shop does a nice install and suspends the exhaust on the rubber hangers as MB does, rather than welding it, I say do it.

I have purchased several cats for R129's this way, even get a certificate for CA emissions when I do it..You'd never know the difference.

You can also buy a "bolt-on" solution. There's a fellow in San Diego who will fab the cat and ship it to you for around $500 or so.. I can dig up his info if need be, but his cat is really no different than what a good shop could make for you...

The ML probably uses three inch exhaust. Shouldn't be a problem matching one up. Just tell them to be careful with your 02 sensors.

he's right

There is a current recall on the ML cats and it doesn't matter how many miles you have.

call the dealer and ask for a service advisor. Give them your vin# and ask about the recall on ML Catalytic converters.
