ETS Light and No Cruise Control

Was driving the 98 ML320 (123K miles) tonight around town and the ETS Light came on and is staying on. No previous issues with this - ever. I did a search and found a seemingly common cause is a brake switch under the dash somewhere. I road tested, and sure enough there is no cruise control. Is there any test I can do to test the brake switch - is it a normally open or normally closed switch that I can do a continuity test on. Also, where exactly is it at and if I do a DIY will the light reset itself or will I have to have a shop reset it.

ETA: Brake lights seem to work - I also did a search after this post and found Gilly's reply about the switch. Would a failure in the steering angle sensor cause an ETS light also?

The 98 used two different brake switches and you will need the Vin # to get the correct one. Mine has two switches and a 4-pin connector. Later units use a 6 pin connector. On mine, one set was normally open, the other set was normally closed. They are about $14 when purchased though someone like our list host above.

The switch is mounted to the brake pedal bracket, just above the the brake pedal arm. squeezing the release and rotating 1/4 turn clockwise will put the bugger in your hand.

Do your brake lights work? If the switch was the problem, replacing it will turn the ETS light off. Also check your fluid level in the master cylinder, as normal wear of the brake pads will consume some of the fluid volume in the master cylinder. I always bump the car until I can see the fluid move as the dirt line can fool you.

Regards,

We have had a similar situation with our 2000 ML320 where the BAS/ETS dash lights come on and no cruise control. The solution in each case has been to stop driving and restart, then everything is back to normal.

Easy DIY fix, see http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w163-m-class/1166641-ets-bas-warning-light-fix.html for instructions.

MB Part was $10.49 locally - took me 15 minutes or less to do. ETS light gone when I cranked up. Haven't tried the cruise control yet, but I'm sure its most likely OK.
