Fuel gauge does not reset on refueling

I have a 01 430 with about 67000mi, and the fuel gauge suddenly stopped working. With refueling the needle remained in the same spot and continued to drop to empty even though I filled up. It continues to do so even after several refuelings. It does not gradually climb after driving. I "rebooted" the car by disconnecting the battery, and this returned the fuel gauge to a normal operating pattern, until the next fill up, where it failed again to regester a full tank of fuel. This is the firsts MB I have owned and your site has been a big help. Thanks.............. 2/19/07 up date, after refueling a few times found out that if I don't top off the tank to the pump cut off, the gauge works just fine. So guess will put off the trip to the parts store or dealer for awhile.

I have an 01 ML430 and my gage does the same thing. When you fill up it goes to full then slowly falls off. Some times after I fill up it goes to full and when i turn off the key and restart it goes to empty. A lot of times i'll pull the fuse for the dash and it'll register the right amount. But as soom as you fill up the circus starts again. I guess the only fix would be a new fuel sender. But don't quote me on that one.

two options.

first is to take it in and have the cluster recoded to "direct sensor value"

if that doesnt fix it, the fuel level sensor/pump will need to be replaced

From description I believe that Johnhef is correct..bulletin on the cluster holding correct coding..start there.
Only other choice is sending unit which is part of the fuel pump assembly.
