W163 ML 2002 New hatch struts are worse than the ones they replace.

The original hatch struts were replaced under warranty (2002 model).
Thought it was time to replace these ones because they wouldn't push the hatch all the way to the top anymore. (just short by three inches).
Ordered new struts and found them to be not as good as the old ones.
These new struts stop short of 'full open' position by about 12 inches...
Can struts lose pressure with age?
Maybe these new struts have lost their gas over time..?
Anyone else had this problem with 'new' struts.?
Can the hinges become blocked or clogged with dust which makes them move less freely?
I'm certain the hatch has not gained weight over the years.
Have the struts been superseded.?
These new ones came from ********.
Any comments, hints, or advice would be welcome.
regards

If you bought the new struts from a dealer, they're under warranty.
