Nice-looking surplus G Wagen

I saw a Nice-looking surplus G Wagen at my indie's shop when I was there this morning. He told me he had bought it in Switzerland recently as military surplus. It was pretty cool-looking. The top above the driver was hard, but the back was canvass.

Are G Wagens like this very common in the US?

Not very. They have to be pretty old to be legally imported.

We have (had) a surplus guy in town that imported old Pinzgauers.

I thought this one was diesel, but the owner said no. Even though most Europeans seem to favor diesels, the Swiss prefer gassers. This fellow is German.

In Germany, back in the late 70's and early 80's, the U.S. Army bought a bunch of them for use by their civilian ammo dump guards. They were just basic vehicles, no leather, crank windows, etc. Not sure if they were diesel or gas. They ought to still be around, and meet the DOT "25-year" requirement. Should be an easy import, but I'll bet most are pretty well shot by now. Ned

I have an 02 G500, and yes they are pretty rare beasts....

I have seen a few at gas stations around, and talk to the owners every so often. None of the other owners that I have talked to have used them for the purpose they were built for.

My indy also have 1 other G that he services, but its an older diesel that does not get driven much.

The diesels are very rare in the US, I think. I believe they were sold in Canada but not here.

There are many of us in the USA who use the G's exactly as they were designed. I've been driving one since 1984; and they've taken me to some very nice and isolated spots.

Attached are a couple of photos taken in the San Juan Mountains of SW Colorado. The foursome shot is at +13,000 on the Imogene Pass Trail after having started the day on the Black bear Trail. Google them to see if they classify as places for which these trucks were built. Left to right, the trucks are from Chattanooga, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Albuquerque.

The other shot is at the top of California Pass, also above 13,000 ft and in the San Juans.

The sunset shot is at Point Sublime on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. It takes a vehicle driving for the purpose it was built to traverse the 20 mile 4WD track to get there.

To repeat, there is a cadre of folks in the US who use them exactly for the purpose they were built.

Oh, I use mine to almost its full potential...

Just do not have enough time to do some of the more extreme stuff.

Plus, its black, and we dont want to scratch it...

Other than that, its been covered in mud, dust, gone over rocks, gotten stuck 3 or 4 times (mud was deeper than I though... oops), scaled rock, and pretty much done all I have asked it to, including being a great daily driver!

I have some pictures of the last time it went offroad. Nothing too serious, but definitely doing what it was built to do!

And Dutch, the G's look right at home in those shots!

That's why they sell rubbing compound, polishing compound, and scratch and swirl removers.

If you think about it the G is probably one of the worlds rarest productions cars outside of things like Ferrari and rolls royce. Sure they've made what 185,000? but its taken them 30 years to do it. Ford or VW make that many cars every month. In the US the situation is even crazier since the higher volume G500/G55 has been here for less then 7 years. I've only ever seen 4 grey market G's in CT and one of them was sold in MA a few weeks after I saw it.
