How to make ML430 exhaust quiter?

Hi gentlemen.
I sold my beloved S500 w140 body and bought 1999 ML430. ML, of course, cannot compete with S-class due to different class and the fact it was designed and built in USA. I like the truck but the exhaust is driving me nuts. It groans under certain RPMs. I though, when I test drove the truck, that noise was due to old and failing engine mounts and didn't pay attention to noise as my S500 was a bit noisier until I replaced engine mounts on it. I went to a shop for inspection and mechanic told me that engine mounts are good and all ML430s have groaning noise due to very short exhaust system. Is his statement true? Any ML430 owners in here: how loud is your exhaust? Truck has 128k highway miles from VA to NY, it's 1999 and was maintained well. Are there any solutions or different and quiet exhaust system on the market?
