99' ML 430 ignition/starter

when key is turned ignition/starter cranks continuously as if caught or stuck, but will not release and crank engine. Happening about once week with more frequency, wait 15 minutes and it'll usually carank...what's up?

If I understand you correctly - the starter is turning but not engaging the flywheel (turning motor over)?

bad bendix (starter drive)

if the spring in the starter bendix is weak or broken it will not engage the flywheel; but the starter will turn normally. bad thing is ,you have to pull the starter..good luck

TX76531....Thank You! Now it's going "dead" while driving! loss of power steering, breaks etc. Wait about 25-30 minutes and it'll start up again but 20 minutes later, the same. Please help - BDS

If your CPS (crank position sensor) has never been replaced I would bet its a failing CPS. Common problem with this vehicle. My 2 cents.
