2000 ML320 left turn signal acting up

The left turn signal started acting strangely a couple of weeks ago.

Symptoms are that when activated:

it will sometimes stay on (no blink, and the lights won’t go off when the signal is canceled;

it will sometimes work fine for a few seconds and then blink rapidly;

most of the time it blinks rapidly.

Also, when the automatic door lock on the key fob is used, the left turn signal light, which typically blinks along with the others, does not come on at all.

I replaced the left turn signal relay with a part supplied by the dealer, but that made for no difference.

Any suggestions?

TIA
