406/416

Howdy Benzie
The 406 is the short version of the 416. I think they do come with the six speed tranny so if you don't want to go through a 20 you won't have to. If they don't come in the 6 speed then look into a 404. Generally the 404's are a lot less than the 406/416 in the USA, I don't know what they cost in your country. So save up your pennies and join the group.

Yo Frank,

Yeah, the unimogs available here are mainly recovery vehicles, and since most of them are 20 years old or more, they are rapidly replaced by Japanese made trucks (WHAT A SHAME!!)

Went to the bus service depot over the weekend, and I saw three moggies under a shed, shortwheelbase versions and covered with a thick layer of dust. Must have been de-commissioned for some time. Checked with the depot manager though, and he told me that these moggies will be auctioned off for scrap (WHAT A SHAME!)

Trying to find out now whether they can be re-registered as a 'private' commercial vehicle.

My thoughts are running wild now, how bout buying two, one to restore, one as a parts bin........

Is there any way that you might be able to get the Mogs before they go to auction?¿ Chances are good that an auction will drive up the price. Also try to see if one is a runner. Other ways to get a vehicle registered in the U.S. is as a farm vehicle, a classic or historical vehicle or see if there is anything about age exceptions. Hope this helps and have fun

I would sure like to get the bus company to preserve one of the moggies as it would sure be a heritage to them.

The moggies have good bodywork, havent checked the engines (Will probably need your advice on that!!) and the interior looks sound, if not a little funky from mildew. (And these are the metal hardtop version!!! Will need new tires too!!

I'll check them out over the next weekend again.....

Howdy Benzie,
Hard tops are usually on the commercial vehicles when they have implements on them. Look for rust along the lower edge under the headlights and the back corners of the cab. Also try to get a vin number. If they have the paper work they should have it. It might not be called a vin but it should be. You might be able to find it onthe truck. I think it might be on the frame on the passenger side towards the front. Well have fun dreaming Mog dreams

Yo Frank,

You really got me fired up on this Unimog Frenzy....Think I'll pay Moggie a visit this evening.. (man I have even christianed her!!)

There is a chance they may sell everything log stock barrel to me...

I'll bring me screwdriver to check the panelwork, wouldn't want rust lurking behind chunks of Bondo, would we ?

Thanks again, Frank.

Howdy Benzie,
Boy!¡ It sounds like you got it real bad I have a question. How mechaniclly inclined are you?¿ The Mog usually aren't hard to maintain , but can be tricky to get them going again. If they have been "down" a while a lot of the rubber parts can be in bad shape. Good luck!¡

Well Frank,

I was thinking if I can pull parts off the other two (I have garage space for only one mog), then parts is not really a problem. I know the clutch is going to be a pain to replace, but I am going to take this easy....Perhaps, it may take a year or more to get it running.

I'll have a look at the engine soon, and let you know its model.... would be great to see if it turns!!
