Coolant Expansion Tank Overflow Hose

Hi,
What is inside this hose that connects to top of the expansion tank from top of the radiator. I noticed there is something inside the hose about 4" down from tip of the tank end of the hose. Hard to figure out as it's not clearly visible. That's on my 2006 ML500. Hose 440 shown on the attachment diagram.
