99 ML320 running board lighting module

I got ML320 back in 1999. A month after I had the vehicle, I added the illuminated running boards and asked a Mercedes dealer to install it. 2 years ago, I had an accident when someone clipped me and torn out my front bumper. After I had the car fixed, I noticed that the passenger side running board was no longer lit. Fortunately, the dealer fixed it for me when I had the A service as a courtesy as the warranty for accessories was for 1 year only, or so I was told. Earlier this year, the car had another accident damaging the front, including the bumper, the hood, both headlights, the radiator, the A/C condenser and even the cooling fan. I had it repaired and again I noticed that the passenger side running board was no longer lit. Since no damage was done to that side of the vehicle, I could not include it as an insurance claim. The mechanic in the body shop took the module apart and told me that it was filled with water. To repair it, it would mean out-of-pocket expense for me for around $300. Does anyone know of any defects with the lighting module for the running board? I have not seen the lighting module myself but I cannot imagine why Mercedes would design something so expensive to replace when it was just a burnt bulb. I am also concerned with the water leaking into it. Can someone provide some insights? Thanks.

I've seen them fill up with water also. What the "light module" is is a plastic cylinder that the clear tube attaches to on one end, and it has what appears to be similar to a projector lamp on the other side, shining towards the clear plastic tube.
No idea exactly why they get filled up with water, road spray i assume.

ps parts are available seperately, but the parts guy will need to find the page in his accesories parts book which lists them all. i believe parts for the running boards come from a company in Canada.
