CD error 1
'98 ML320. Last winter I put a new OEM CD changer in (purchased on Ebay). Worked just fine for several months, then it quit and displayed "CD error 1". It loads each disc and tries to play, but doesn't. I tried a cleaning CD; it then worked for a few days then quit again. Now works only briefly and intermittently, usually not at all.
Does anyone know what this code means? Can I exchange it at a Mercedes dealer for a remanufactured unit, as I did on my VW? (Incidentally, both the Mercedes and VW CD changers appear to be the same unit.)

In the owners packet, there should be a manual for the radio, which would include the CD changer, even though you didn't get the truck with the changer. I believe the radio manual still covers the CD changer operation and does mention the error messages and what they might mean.

Well, doggone it you're right! My biggest complaint about this vehicle is lack of adequate documentation (i.e. a service manual), and here where it's available I didn't even look.
Anyway there are only two codes, dirty disc (1) and scratched disc (2). I swapped magazines between cars, and it still doesn't play (both magazines work in the other car). It won't even play the cleaning CD, so I assume the laser is very dirty or getting tired. I'll be calling the dealer next week to see if they can send it out.
