Also, found a surprise in the bottom of the pan! It's plastic, and appears too large to be one of those rings from under the cap of a bottle of oil. Any ideas?

On the positive side, no leaks despite the crude arrangement I had for dispensing the sealant.

Lenny,

I asked for the photo of sensor because I would not think a plastic cap should be on it when installed, but I really don't know for sure. I looked at a diagram on AlldataDIY it's below, the sensor is S43 unit and in the diagram I don't see any cover on the the sensor. If you click on the smaller of the two diagrams it has a diagram on the left which shows the sensor installed in the vehicle. Also I'm having a hard time visualizing the orientation of the sensor when it's installed. On your installation it seems like the sensor tip is pointed upward toward the top of the vehicle but in the diagram it seems like the tip is pointed down towards the ground. What do you think?

Edited: I see your vehicle is a 1998. I have Alldata DIY for my 1999 so that may account for the difference.

Ron, the diagram looks like the sensor I took off. Except for filters, I don't think I've ever replaced a part on this vehicle that looks like the one I took off! The white cap indeed points up, as the second photo indicates. The wire now goes into the bottom.

Lenny, that's good I was worried there for a minute. Also that white cap does stay on?

And I have no clue what that thing was in the bottom of the pan.

I left the cap on; the car is running normally as far as I can tell.
