RI MB Shops ?
Anyone know of a good independent MB repair shop in RI? German Motors in PVD, they any good? I also kind of recall a place named Moffat's (sp?) in Warwick but can't find them anywhere. I'll be getting a late 80's, early 90's diesel pretty soon and want to find a good place to have a through once over before I take on normal maintenance. I may even bring it to Hatch & Sons in MA. they are good but expensive.
Thanks Much. I provide feed back about any shop I end up going to. |

German Motors in PVD
I do not know whether they are good or not, but they seem not to take big job. I once asked the price for timing chain, guides, rails, cam sprocket replacement. They suggested me to go to dealer. By the way, did you try Inskip. They offer loaner car to old MB owner. I didn't try them.

Never really thought about Inskip. I'll try them for a part order soon and see how they react. I did find out the Viti Bros. MB in either Tiverton or Middletown is pretty trustworthy. Don't know if they'd work on the old cars. Since I wrote the question, I've obtained 2 300D's, both 83's, one sedan and one coupe. So far I've been able to do all the work myself. One or the other of them will have its A/C fixed this summer. That I do have to farm out as I'm not an A/C knowledgable person. The W123 cars are not too bad to work with and parts haven't been a problem. I try to buy what I need here to help support the site.
As for German Motors, I brought my '58 220S to them once to see if they could balance the carbs. Basically the guy told me his father (semi-retired) might take it on just out of interest. They didn't seem too helpful. |

Providence, Rhode Island
There is a very good chance that I will be moving to Providence, RI in a few months. Can anyone recommend a good indie shop?
Thanks.

Hmm
Viti is a great dealership in my home town, Tiverton RI. In the same town, RDM is a great MB shop. He has all the same stuff that the dealer has. He is one of the best MB mechanics I've dealt with. Crandall Road, Tiverton RI.

shertex,
The number for Moffat's garage in Warwick is (401) 738-1167. However, when searching for this info online, I also found a 'realtor page' that suggests the property is presently for sale. It would be interesting to know if the same techs will still be there with the new property owner. The ad suggests that a completely new automotive business will reside there after the sale. SVO Conversions in RI?
Hi there, has anyone done the SVO (Straight Vegetable Oil) conversion in Rhode Island? I just got an '85 300sd and am looking to start converting it over; I hoped to find some local folks who had already done the conversion or were in the process so I could watch/help/learn before I tackle my own car. I'm pretty mechanically inclined, but don't have much experience with major auto repairs so I wanted to educate myself before I tear apart my daily driver.
Please let me know if anyone would be willing to take a newbie under their wing for a little while. Thanks! |

As far as German Motors in Providence, they stink. Prices are ridiculous and they'll only take a 108, 111 etc if they are in the mood, if at all. Pulled in there one afternoon with both 4.5 108 and 280SE 111 with a buddy, his 111 was acting up and he had to drive it back to NYC. The good folks at German Motors couldn't have been any less helpful. We might as well have pulled into a 7-11. Sold him a $60.00 relay and said good luck with a smirk. No one would even come have a look or offer a suggestion. Bunch of snotty creeps. Turned away another female friend in a jam, in a 6 cyl 108 and another friend in a MB wagon. Beating work and good, quality customers off with a stick at that place. I don’t know what the hell they do there but don't waste the gas.
