New York
Helms Brothers MB Dealer
Pretty nice operation, must schedule 3 weeks in advance for an appointment. I feel they are pretty trustworthy and they stand behind their work. But high dealer labor rates keep me away, except for the absolute necessary work to the car. note: they have a large stock on parts Silver Star MB Dealer They are more flexible with scheduling appointments. They charged me for work on my car when I only asked for an estimate. Their workmanship is not the best, I had to vacuum after them (large wire clippings) and reinstall some interior trim. note: their parts dept is pretty small. Rheinland Motors Small independent shop with 3 lifts and about 15 cars inside. Many folks on this forum seem to think they over-quoted and possibly mis-quoted work on my car. I only had an oil change there so I don't really have anything but a first impression of them. Last edited by whunter; 02-02-2006 at 01:21 AM. |

Kraft Motors (E55th St & Ave J):
Good independent shop, Only work on MB's. Alittle expensive, but excellent work, great service, and knowledgable repair men. I would only suggest bringing car here if you have some major problem. One bad point--you have to drop off the car early in the morning at around 7am, and pick up at a later time. Sovereign Motors (Flatbush Avenue) MB dealership, I dont have much experience with them--had an oil change done once. Good stock of parts, and friendly parts department. Service department is ok. Lots of good looking secretaries in there ![]() |

I have had no problems and they stand behind their work 100% John |

New owner of an '87 300TD in the lower Manhattan area. Any advice on shops in the area? Any feedback regarding Mercedes Benz Manahattan Inc? Thanks.

Mike,
Being a good Georgia boy, I have no experience with the damnyankees presumably running the shop in Manhattan. However, I will share what I believe is correct concerning that dealer. I know that Daimler-Benz let all of their dealerships go private in the last half-century in the US except that one. So, it is still owned directly by the company. I presume (hope) that its quality in mechanics would be on par with the company's general devotion to quality. 'Course, I could be totally wrong. Someone correct me if I am...my memory could be on the fritz. Regards, ------------------ John J. Meadows '83 300D 3.0L 260k mi. '85 190E 2.3L 99k mi. |

Regarding the MB Manhattan, Inc. We'll it took 4 days to get my Trap Oxidizer replaced and the 210Kmi service done.
Other than that and the irritating reality of having to speak to a middle man (assistant service manager) who seemed somewhat disinterested, the experience was OK. It looks like the job was done correctly and report was understandable. They allso ran a VMI (vehicle master index) which provided me with every time dealer work was performed on the car. Turned out to have been delivered at MB Manhattan originally. The parts department was very helpful and my 10% MBCA membership works. They also seem to be able to get any part available over night in the worst case. |

I live in Oceanside Long Island N.Y. right near Lake view MBZ. Is that place good to have ones car serviced at? Are they nice etc. Today I'm going there for some routine maintence, so I guess I'll find out, however I'd like to know if its a good place to establish a lasting relationship with.

How about Somerset?
Hi. I've got to recommend my MB dealer -- Millennium MB, in Bridgewater/Somerville area. They are really terrific guys, and are on an "enthusiasts" wavelength. I'm having them do some custom work on a gray-market vehicle, something other MB dealers wouldn't touch. And, of course, their work is first-class -- you can't imagine how finicky I am.
Good luck. P.S., I've heard that Princeton (I think they're really in Lawrenceville) MB is also "enthusiast oriented", but I've also heard mixed reviews of their work quality. |

Thanks for the info Ken! I have and EXCELLENT dealership here in Little Silver, but do not know how much they are "Performance Minded". I have a SL 320 and will keep that in mind, as I am interested in "upgrading" the car.

Ken,
How obliged were they to servicing your gray-market vehicle? I wouldn't mind the drive from New York for them to service mine...Thanks. |

Not sure what you mean by "obligation"
re: "...How obliged were they to servicing your gray-market vehicle?..." I'm not sure what you mean by "how obliged were they", as you obviously know that they have no obligation whatsoever to work on any gray market vehicle -- I've heard that some dealerships won't even let you bring such a car to them -- and warranties are non-existant for grays in this country, anyway. And in any case, my "gray" is 16+ yrs old and has over 100,000 miles, so warranty obligation is a non-issue. I guess they are willing to work on it simply because they like to work on unusual MBs (and of course, I'm paying :-). Maybe because it's an unusual model (a given, considering it's a gray) and they're curious, and maybe (possibly the biggest reason?) also because (this gray aside) I'm a regular customer anyway -- I have three other MB's (USA legal) that they regularly service. But in any case, they never balked at workiing on it, except warning that they may have trouble getting a part, or getting specs for an adjustment. In any case, they are really good techs! |
