Ron- If you contact Contemporary Motors, ask for Jeff Charig.....He was our salesman and he is really a great person to deal with. Tell him I sent you..I send a-lot of people there who are looking for cars, or just plain looking. There is no PRESSURE to buy....He will also give you a complete tour of the dealership. Enjoy!

I went to the Freehold,NJ MB dealer to get a 60000 mile service for my 1973 280SE 4.5. They refused me because they no longer have the techs that are familiar with old cars. About two weeks later, the steering wheel started to clunk when turned right or left. The service manager said it could be the tie rods or ball joints and to bring it in to put it on a lift. I brought it in but the service manager was on the road. I got another service tech there and demonstrated the clunking sound. He took the car to the service area and in 5 minutes he came back with the car and said the noise disappeared. I know that they do not want to service this car but I don't know what they did to get rid of the steering sound. I did not follow the car and therefore did not observe the techs and they provided no info how the noise was eliminated only to suggest I bring the car for service somewhere else. My question is what could they have done and is it dangeroussince there was the sound when turning the steering wheel

I know the dealership you are talking about and I NEVER would use just for those kind of experiences you have described. This type of practice has been demonstrated there and customers only find out after it's too late. I can HIGHLY recommend Contomporary Motors in Little Silver, it's only about 5-10 miles from David Michael in Freehold. Ask for Dennis, he is the service manager and I know him quite well. Inform him that we spoke and expliain your experience to him. He may be able to tell you over the phose about the safety issue....eith way, you need to get the car looked at. Contomporary Motors is an EXCELLENT dealership all around-----BAR NONE. I have purchased several cares from them becuase of their customer satisfaction and attention to details that ensure your motoring pleasure. Keep me posted as to how you make out....You can go on Contompary's site at http://www.mercedesoflittlesilver.com Good luck

Does anyone have an opinion on Rallye Motorcars in Roslyn, Long Island? I've had minor work done there on my 1989 300SE and have been statisfied thus far, but I'm not sure of their reputation overall. I don't drive the car much so it's a long time between service needs.

Anyone have a favorite shop on Long Island?

Thanks,
George

Rallye is a great shop, the only place on LI to stay away from is Lakeview , MBZ in Rockville Centre. My favorite shop is Competition MBZ of Smithtown.

You're on LI? Why don't you become a member of Mercedesshop.com Nt chapter.

Thanks a lot Capt... I've heard other negative comments about Lakeview. Funny thing is, I was turned off to them myself just based on a phone conversation. I live in Massapequa Park and when I moved to Long Island 3 years ago I called the various dealerships to inquire of their service. Suffice it to say, you can tell a lot about any business just from a simple phone call.

Anyhow, I've heard good things about Competition, but Rallye works well given my commute to Manhattan (shuttle service to LIRR), although the prices could be better. Nevertheless, I'll pay up for peace of mind. Thanks for the good word.

By the way, what is the club you speak of?

George

You're better off at Competition of Smithtown, or you can also try Helms Brothers of Bayside. The Club is the Mercedesshop chapter of NY. We get together and jsut have fun. The next meeting might be March 10th. We'll see about that. There is not much to do know, because its winter however during the summer we'll have more activities planned. What kind of Benz do you have.?

I have a 1989 300SE, white with gray interior. It's a southern car that has yet to be driven in the salt and sand. I intend on keeping it that way.

Let me know when the next meeting is planned. I appreciate it.

Cheers

Never heard of it. However David Hendy swears by this guy Steve Crawford. The shop is in Queens, but its a great shop, and if Dave trusts his rare and beautiful 500E there, I'll gurantee its a great shop. Next time I need service I'll bring my car there. The phone # is (718) 451 2500. If I'm mistaken Email David Hendy.

P.S what kind of Benz do you have, also do you want to become a member of MErcedesshop.com NY chapter. We have meetings and get-togethers, its going to be fun.

A friend of mine just recently recommended LaPoma's Parkside Motors, in Valley Stream N.Y. (516) 561 3434.

Never tried them, but heard good things.

Next time the 300E needs something I'll go there.
