Memorable/great lines in movies (possible spoiler)
I'm a connoisseur of memorable and great lines of dialogue in movies. (Books too, but we'll get to that later.) For me, to be memorable or great, the line or lines can be either funny or dramatic, but they have to give me the shivers, or make me jump, or have something extra special. YMMV.
For example, the original "The Terminator" has no less than 4 separate zingers, even aside from the famous "I'll be back" line from the Terminator itself at the police station. ******************** My favorite has to be the final scene, one of the greatest in all film. Sarah Connor, who has survived and destroyed the original Terminator, is sitting in her jeep at a last-chance gas station near the Mexican border. She knows, as do we, that the great struggle against the computers and machines is only a few years away. Small boy (pointing off to clouds on the horizon as a dust devil swirls by): Viene la tormenta! Sarah (to gas station owner): What'd he say? Gas Station Owner: He said, "There's a storm coming." Sarah (looks off into the distance at the clouds. Softly): I know. (Sarah starts her jeep and drives up into the distant mountains, the Terminator theme crashing in our ears) ***************************** Now that's the kind of heart and soul that was missing from the second film (and for all I know, the third, since I haven't seen it). How about you?

Don't remember the line exactally but one of my favs is in "long kiss goodby"...the old guy they are hoping can help talking to his wife about her dog licking its butt....something to the effect that What ever that dog is looking for is either long gone...or in there to stay...
I do remember we had to rewind the movie about 3 times to get the line over our laughing... |

Auric Goldfinger in "Goldfinger": "No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die!"
Gen. Turgidson in "Dr. Strangelove": "Mr. President, I'm not saying we wouldn't get our hair mussed up, but I do say 10-20 million killed tops, depending on the breaks." Black Sperm in "Everything You Wanted to Know About Sex": "What am I doing here? Sherrif Brody in "Jaws": "We're going to need a bigger boat." |

"Heart Beat"
This was a small-budget independent production from about 1980; I recall seeing it on HBO back when they were only on about 10 hours a day. It was a fictionalized story about Jack Kerouac ("On the Road") and his friend Neal Cassady, and Carolyn, the woman they both loved. Good casting: John Heard ("Cat People") as Jack, Nick Nolte as Neal, Sissy Spacek as Carolyn.
It's Sissy's last line that makes the movie, heard in voice over: "Jack's weakness was that he believed the world was made by compromises, and Neal's, that he believed the world was destroyed by them. And as for me . . . I think compromises are like dental appointments. You're damned if you make 'em, and damned if you don't."

From the quotable "Princess Bride"
Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die. Inigo Montoya: Who are you? Westley: No one of consequence. Inigo Montoya: I must know... Westley: Get used to disappointment Miracle Max: The King's stinking son fired me, and thank you so much for bringing up such a painful subject. While you're at it, why don't you give me a nice paper cut and pour lemon juice on it? We're closed |

Casablanca has too many to list as typified by a friend of mine after he saw Casablanca for the first time a few months ago," Wow, there are a lot of cliche's in that movie"
For those too young to know, They weren't cliche's when the movie was made. They became cliche's as a result of the movie. For starters, but ommitteing many, Round up the usual suspects Here's looking at you kid play it again Sam This could be the start of a beautiful relationship |

"play it again sam" is the biggest misquote of lines ever. Neither Ilsa or Rick ever say that in the film.
Ilsa says "Play it Sam, play "As Time Goes By" Rick says "If she can stand it, I can. Play it!" However, Capt Louis Renault has the best lines: How extravagant you are, throwing away women like that. Some day they may be scarce. We musn't underestimate American blundering. I was with them when they blundered into Berlin in 1918. Rick Blaine: And remember, this gun is pointed right at your heart. Captain Renault: That is my least vulnerable spot. I'm afraid Major Strasser would insist. Just one from Grouch in "Horsefeathers" Wagstaff: Tomorrow we start tearing down the college. Professor: But Professor. Where will the students sleep? Wagstaff: Where they always sleep. In the classroom. Last edited by MTI; 08-05-2004 at 06:00 PM. |

Skipping back in time from the "Airplane" spoofs to the "Airport" movies, I believe this was in the original "Airport", where a 707 was stuck in the snow and they had to clear the runway, George Kennedy was the actor, his character was like a jack-of-all-trades for this airline, and they have it partially dug out, but he's giving it like 110% thrust to get it the rest of the way out:
kid/apprentice: "The books say that can't be done!" Kennedy character: "That's the thing about the 707, kid; it can't read!" Gilly

Claude Rains! Yes!
MTI, you're right! Capt. Renault has the best lines, viz.:
[explaining his collaborating with the Nazis:] "I bend with the wind. At the moment the prevailing wind blows from Vichy." "I never gamble. I am but a poor corrupt official." [Later, during the raid on Rick's Place ordered by Strasser:] "Rick, I am surprised at you! Gambling in your establishment!" [said as he takes his payoff from the croupier and stuffs it in his uniform pocket]
