really hard decision now. This summer i will get about $2,000, i figured i should spend $500 on what i want and save the rest. i am looking into getting a hand gun since that might be more "Practical" for home protection. I am 21 and in college so i don't think i can afford the any mods and guns you guys talk about here

So anyways i am thinking now that maybe i should pay $100 more than what i was gonna spend on a Ruger 10/22 stainless steel with synthetic stock ($200) and buy this 9mm hand gun:

http://firearms.smith-wesson.com/store/index.php3?cat=293614&item=831347&sw_activeTab=1

has anyone played around with this gun pro's and con's for it? i want to spend around $350 cause i know i will regret paying more than that.

Back in the late 80's. Once I turned 18, my first big purchase was a 9mm Uzi. Mom and Dad never knew. A friend of mine from h.s., (who also went along to the UW) bought a .45 cal Uzi and a SPAS shotgun.

We were roomies and had to surrender any guns to the University police. I distinctly remember their faces when we "turned in" 3 assault weapons. All three better than the crap they had: Daewoo AK-47s perhaps.

Getting back to your story, I sold it for a 2X more than I paid. Thanks to the assault weapons ban.
Yessiree. Paid $275 for it, sold it for $600, and kept the scope. Bought a cherry 1943 IBM M-1 Carbine for the money, a possession my fellow computer programmers swoon over.

I've seen AKs as low as 299$ on the net. It is amazing how cheap they are getting. The AKM is a later model of the AK-47, it is much more compact and better built and designed model than the AK-47. That is why the higher price tag.

Right before the ban a bunch came in from the newly freed Soviet bloc countries. The Czech and Hungarian models are very sought after, the Romanian less so, and I have heard the Bulgarians made a decent one. I don't know if there are any actually Russians ones in the US. The Finns also made a forerunner version called the Valmet, which is pretty collectable.

Ned, forget the Sigma. Its cheap, you will rarely find holsters for it, and is not widely respected throughout the gun community.

For home defense, get a 12ga. Go to your gunstore and get an old Remingon 870 Police trade-in, or get a Legacy Escort Aimguard (7+1 capacity). I got mine for $160 out the door.

If you want a pistol, look for a CZ in .45acp or a Bersa Thunder .380. Those Bersa's are inexpensive and will run forever. They have a great reputation. Dont let the gunmonger try to talk you up to a Walther PPK in the same caliber. The guns will last the same amount of time, if not longer in the Bersa's case, and the PPK will cost you twice what the Bersa will. Hell, if you like polymers, get a Glock as long as its not one in .40S&W. They are known for the most KaBooms. G17 or G21 will do you nicely, and there are parts, mags, and 'smiths all over that will cater to them.

If you really want more opinions than you can read, sign up for The High Road and ask there. My handle is the same there. Tell them I sent you.

How about a Cetme?

7.62x51MM (.308) Standard with 20 round clips. Hard hitting, and extremely accurate shooter. All for about 353 dollars.

A good friend had a H&K. Man, that was a sweet shooter. After a few years he sold it for more than he paid for it. Got it through an advert in "Shotgun News" and drove to TX to buy it. My guess is that BATF would object.

The Aks in Iraq were U$1.00 just not long ago then $10 and maybe a bit more by now...The war was good for something Kirk!

and thanks for the explenation... Kinda same thing with SKSs, I thought that they were either Korean or Chinese but seems they were made other places too...

There is this AR gun that I think is a 22 and it folds itself into the stock. I kinda would be interested in that but I haven't looked into it very far.

Yah, there is just nothing like a pump engaging the shell......stops'em in their tracks... without firing....

I think getting a fully automatic AK from Cambodia to over the fireplace might present some serious logistical problems, like how to get out of Leavenworth, for example.

The world is awash in the damn things. It shows the genius of their design. Any bozo country can whip them out by the thousands. The Soviets flooded the world with them as part of their wars of national liberation, and now the same countries sell them as a means of rasing foriegn exchange. I shot a Norinco, made in China about $300, a few weeks back, and was amazed at what a quality piece it was for $300!

I don't know about .22 rimfire, but there are a ton of .223 versions of the AK-47. One of my friends has one, and I think it is just a great gun that is, while not superior to the AR-15, a better value for the money for the same type of weapon. I am currently stalking this guy in pre-ban at the guns shows, and when one shows at the right price, I will add it to my collection:

I will probably wait for the ban thing to be done and maybe attend a gun show.

I went shooting with my dad the other day. and although he has always had quite a selection i never really shot them growing up (Im 21). yesterday we shot a 9mm, .38, .357 magnum. and those were fun and all. but then came the shot gun (12ga)! holy jesus that was a good feeling. and i thought how could i top this? so he brought out some 12 ga magnum shells. I think for home protection it has to be a 12ga. can't miss with those.

now i need to shoot a machine gun to top that off? dunno why i was never into guns.

Why wait? The ban thing has always been kind of a joke. There is so much pre-ban stuff around, and you can get the parts to modify any post-ban weapon you purchase. At first, it raised the price of "pre-ban" guns, but that has subsided to the point there isn't a heck of a lot of difference. I always felt the "ban" was pretty meaningless. I am a lot more concerned about government databases on gun owners. We are all becoming "registered" gun owners, we just don't know it.

Oh, I know Kirk. I've found out when I bought a gun at a show. When I bought my rifle I'm pretty sure the guy didn't run my stuff but he did have some paperwork that sooner or later was most likely run anyway...

Yah, the ban thing is just more of a PITA then anything else to all law obiding folks like us.

Buy from private parties only....
