surgery went fine
for those who knew it was coming - i had the surgery on my shoulder this morning. two hours under the knife, or more accurately scope. took 3 screws to reattach the cartilage to the scapula. the things the hard core shooters will do to tighten their groups
! in all seriousness it was an on the job injury.expecting a good recovery even though i'll be one armed for a while. have already done three sets of exercises, moving my arm only from the elbow down to reduce swelling in my hand and forearm. pain so far is manageable as i haven't yet had to take any meds yet. expecting to be off work for at least one month, during which i'll get to spend a couple weeks in califonia with the wife and kids. time to do some reading then rack out. excuse the smallcase it is difficult working left hand only.

Guy at work had that surery 2 years ago, I had orthroscopic surgery on my right shoulder 4 years ago to fix a trorn rotator cuff tendon. Thats when I found out about my arthritis, when they did the MRI. That explained a lot about the soreness I felt after a lot of heavy work, or weather changes.
Recovery is hell but far faster than if they splayed you open.

best wishes for a quick recovery
Mike,
Good luck and my thoughts are with you. Our neighboor finished pretty serious surgery this summer on her shoulder. She had 4 reattachments needed. As the doctor predicted.... it hurt like hell for about 4 weeks with not much improvement, then the miracle happened and progress went very quickly. Hope your recovery is quick and painless. Chuck |

thanks all.
yes med, i did have a good doc. seeing as you are from the same town, well almost maybe, you might have heard of him, i snagged a pretty decent sleep but got rousted by a pretty heavy ache. seems the way i had been sleeping iritated my shoulder. actually had me thinking about taking a pain killer! getting out of bed and sitting up has reduced it to a numbing ache. lets just say that i am glad i feel pain different than most, although i am now convinced that is the reason the local docs kept saying there was nothing wrong due to the lack of excrutiating pain. the three sets of exercises yesterday have reduced the swelling in my hand to virtually zip. i also seem to have full control of my hand and can grip at 1/2 strength. the muscular ache is no worse than when i had a localized case of lead poisoning in my leg, the bone ache is a bit more, probably due to the grinding and drilling. thanks again for the well wishes y'all.

that is a good question ted, and one i intend to ask during my post-op visit. i can only remember the sensation of pain after the single event in april but 20 years of hand to hand and take down techniques with a little aikido thrown in, my shoulders have taken a pretty good beating.
the doctor did say that my bones are healthy, and there was no sign of arthritis or calcification. that leads me to believe it is from a single event, we'll let the doctor decide. i'm not a surgeon, but i did stay at a holiday inn express once.

Glad to hear everything went ok. I'm sure you'll have some discomfort for a while and getting used to using only 1 arm will be a pain.
But, after a few weeks it sounds like you'll be back to 100%. Don't push it! Type with one hand!

Glad to hear the surgery went well. An acquaintence down the street had the surgery about a month ago after years of pain and he is almost back to normal.

Hey Mike I went to your doc's retirement ceremony this evening at Spartan Stadium. The AD did a speech in between 1/4's it was a first class event and the crowd of 80,000 went wild.
I bet your shoulder is pretty darn sore right now BTW....tough guy. as an added bonus MSU handed the BADgers ass to them. Last edited by MedMech; 11-14-2004 at 07:27 AM. |
