Right now, its blowing some icy mixture so hard that the window in my living room is getting an ice sheet frozen on to it. So this is what people in Southern Cal meant when they laughed at me when I said I was moving here.

The mosquitoes are a problem today here on the gulf coast. We need a good freeze to wipe them out for the season. I ran my A/C today and yesterday, mostly for the humidity. I would spend fall in New England most years if I could.

I grew up in New Hampshire. The icy stuff really sucks, but that's nothing - wait til you get hit by a Noreaster, which is pretty much a snow hurricane. In fact some winters are worse than what they get in Minnesota. Get used to it - take up snowboarding or learn to skate.

I don't know if NH gets that kind of snow fall, but if you watch the weather reports on current lowest temperature, it is usually a town in MN or a town in NH that currently registers as the coldest. There is a reason for that. There is a rotational effect that occurs off the coast of Northern New England when conditions are right that turns air masses coming down from the Artic westward over the Atlantic - counter to the prevailing continental weather pattern of rain moving west to east. These Artic air masses get stopped by the Appalachia Mountains , and begin to turn clockwise in a very slow hurrican-like rotational flow. This usually results in clear sunny days that are stupifyingly cold with a biting wind that makes your boogers freeze. But the weather pattern can also result in things being much worse - rain clouds and moist weather move off the Virginia Coast and head out to sea, and get sucked into this freezing rotational flow, and the moisiture that originated in the southwest gets served up as snowfreezing rain and howling winds as a storm that appears to come from the northeast due to the rotational effect, hence the term nor'easter. They can be truly vicious storms, causing storm surges and massive snow falls because that storm that passed from Texas to Virginia, causing rain for a couple of days to the residents there, gets trapped in this stationary rotation and every bit of it gets dumped as snow and freezing rain over the small geographic area of the New England coastal crescent. Believe it or not, global warming could actually make it worse - as more warm moist air comes up from the South, heavy snowfall and nor-easters may increase. Sounds like you are getting the rain we just had here in Houston served up in that manner. That's the nice stuff. Wait until February.

I just picked my last oranges last week. I think I'll plant another orange tree-my in-laws love-em. If we don't get a frost until mid January, I should harvest bananas, of which I have two fair-sized bunches. Hey Mr tallyman, Tally me bananas.... In February I will transplant my strawberries and begin prepping for my spring garden. And I'll start some tomatoes in my shed.

My pecan harvest sucked this year. This is the fourth year I had poor production. I'm thinking I may have a fungal problem. Or maybe my trees do.

I went for a walk up to the Pictish hill fort again today (2000ft) - I haven't for some time - and nearly froze to death. 50 mph winds + below zero. Enjoy your oranges.

Here on the shores of Long Island Sound all it does is rain. Since the water stays somewhat warm we don't get to much snow.

Heck, the Louisana Yankee's got nothing on South Texas. That stuff, he's talking about, we pull that stuff as weeds from our mango groves.

The mean average temperatures need to be corrected for lapse rate othewise you only find that high mountains are cold - it's more interesting to see 'sea-level' temps. My guess is AK is coldest at sea-level, just call me Einstein.
