You need to run the chkdsk /r command I have mentioned, oh like a hundred times. That will probably fix your Cyclic Redundancy errors so you can copy your files.

Your XP should include a "Microsft Baseline Security Analyzer" This system will look at your entire system and tell you what you have (SP1 or SP2) and what you should have.
It is a whole system diagnostic and will find faults and how to fix them. It will find your problem or problems. You should be able to find this analyzer in your windows update section and you'll have to download this program........good luck BB

just thought i'd give an update......after running chkdks/r the computer would no longer reboot, so it is now at best buy's service department for a new cooling fan and hopefully a new hard drive. I"ll update back when i have a working computer again...thanks for all your help guys

That's not surprising. It's because it locked out the bad sectors on your boot partition. They'll fix it for you now.
