Anyone here know shorthand?

Is it even used anymore? I haven't seen it or heard of it since I was a kid and my mom was learning it.

I think it has probably died from competition with dinky tape recorders (dictaphone thingumys).

Yeah, that's what I figured too. I saw it being referred to in some old movie over the weekend, and started wondering about it. One of those forgotten things.

I haven't seen it in a while myself. My mom knows it, as she worked as a secretary for a number of years. I remember seeing little notes she'd written to herself as I grew up. She was the only person that could read them because she had written them in shorthand! I suppose it'd be a great way to be able to write down stuff you don't want anyone else to be able to read.

Considering the lack of attention paid to penmanship (now there's a term destined for the archaic term bin) these days, you don't need shorthand to confound most readers of longhand.

or it could have been the unforseen neurological side-effect of exposure to "White-Out" while typing those term papers.

my mom used to know Gregg shorthand. As mentioned, this skill has been obsoleted by tape recorders and voice recognition software.

another skill which is in short supply is Morse Code. Unlike shorthand, this is a skill that can come in handy in emergencies. For this purpose, I only know "SOS": ... --- ...

I kinda learned Morse code in Boy Scouts(let's not go there again) as a teenager. I knew the alphabet, but couldn't send & recieve as fast as you see on movies
