I was 'on call' for a neighbor whose health is failing. I helped with little repairs, picking them up when they couldn't get up and taking out the trash, etc. They finally couldn't manage at home and are in a nursing home. Have done similar things for others in the past.

I sometimes stop to help motorists with breakdowns, not as much anymore.

I hope that what goes around comes around. I tell people to pass it along to someone else who needs it.

I think your rules for your thread will limit its popularity. Who cares what you want in a thread?

I'm new to this also so I have nothing to post yet but damn it I will ... eventually.

RULES
1. no one critsizes someone elses act. They thought it was selfless and that's all that counts.
2. no one may spout off about philosophy, politics, religion, sex or anythig else you are not supposed to talk about at the dinner table with inlaws.
3. no "at a boys/girl, good job, nice going ... etc becasue at that point it is no longer a selfless act. Rember, nothing in return except the satisfaction of having done it. I know technicly we are posting here but this is just to get the ball rolling so cut me some slack.
4. I want to see a really really long thread. I'm ok with 2nd place to the Pretty Girls thread.
5. Just post what you did. No commentary, no self glorification. Just post it. Post once, post often.
If you're on a message board publicly bragging about it, then it's not "selfless".

Maybe change the topic title to payless acts

I don't get paid for a lot of stuff I do, but I get great satisfaction. This year it's been down a lot but I manage to sit on one board and still coach chess.

You would have to change the title to a "Cash Free Transaction" then. If you get satisfaction, you got paid in a different coin but still paid. Just nitpicking.

Yep. If you want to get truly technical and analytical about it, there is NO such thing as a TRULY selfless act. If you do something nice or helpful or charitable for someone, and you receive no financial reward, or service in return, or any other tangible compensation, yet you "feel good" about it, then there is still some small degree of self-serving motivation.

The trick is to do something you don't want to do, but then you can't do something you don't want to do. At the risk of being a pretentious *********, this was noticed by the ancient greeks. Nothing new under the sun.

A guy I worked with used to say that 'nice people got off on being nice'. He was a moron (with a Ph.D).

The most selfless act one can do is have children and raise them right.

It's an admirable thing to see people raise their children well. But is it really the most selfless of acts in an overpopulated world? There are many who argue most of mankind's problems arise from just too many people. I go along with this. This is at least part of the reason why we are seeing wars for natural resources, to pick a topical subject. World population has doubled since 1960 (3,000 million to > 6,000 million). It can't keep doubling. I hope to see a time when having more children than the replacement rate (that's two and a bit) earns some general disapproval. Clearly it raises all sorts of interesting issues about personal freedom, but nature (how many people the earth can support) doesn't much care about that. Something always regulates populations - it can be voluntary, or it can be famine, disease and war. What's your take on this?

I selflessly bought myself a big-screen TV. I don't enjoy it at all, my entire motivation was to do my part in regard to getting the economy going.
