Oil for air compressors (used for air tools).

Dear friends;

Do you know the ingredients of oils being used for air compressors that requires oil for compressor lubrication? Some air compressors require SAE 30W (or 10W-30) auto oils, some require "compressor oils" that look like clear and very fluid sewing machine oil.

Can I just use SAE 30W or 10W-30 auto oils in any air compressors that require oil for compressor lubrication (not for air tool lubrication). Thanks.

Best regards,

Eric

I just follow what is stated in the owner's manual. This is for my 70 gallon Husky in my garage.

There isn't just one all-encompassing oil that suits all compressor types.

Motor oil has specific additives for internal combustion applications...compressor oils are designed specifically for compressors, be it vacuum pumps, rotary vane, refrigeration, or piston. Each one requires a specific oil.

Use what is recommended for air pumps, although note that some compressors are oiless. ISO 32 is a typical grade, but 46, 68 and 100 are available for high temp compressors, such as turbines.

There are synthetics available too....maybe we should start a synth vs. dino compressor oil thread?

And by the way, you change the oil based on hours of operation, as the color doesn't change the way used motor oil does.

Thanks for your comments.

As mentioned in my previous post, I was kind of surprised about the fact that a few air compressor manufacturers recommend regular SAE 30W or 10W30 auto oils in their compressors. I always thought that air compressors use a completely different type of oil.
