How do you deal with difficult personalities at work?

Hi all,

I get along with everyone but seemingly 1 guy at work. He made an administrative request that I told him I would have to consider later because of my current work-load but I would try to work it out for him and work together. He immediately called a higher up who immediately called me and told me to make a change! My boss backed me up and he ended up not getting what he wanted at ALL!

So now he seems to be trying to find a dent in my armor to get back at me somehow. Case in point, he needed me to stay late to walk him through a process. I had to take a very important call and could not get back to him until like 8:15pm instead of 8pm. He sends me an email and bcc's his supervisor that I don't take my job seriously enough..this was at 8:07pm! What does he do when he has to go to the doctors office and wait 45 minutes!! Thanks for the vent.

I take it you're the boss. Use the Tony Soprano style of conflict resolution. Take him aside and tell him what you think and why. Clear the air but make it clear you're the boss and you don't appreciate him going over your head.

Here, he learned that he can't get anywhere with your boss, and you learned that your boss is on your side and won't roll over. This is good for both of you to know, and it also helps explain what he did next.

In the second case, he was bccing his own boss to cover his own ass on something, probably because he was already in trouble for being late for this particular task or even other tasks and needed to document some kind of reason (excuse) for it... I wouldn't take that too seriously unless/until his boss comes to your boss to complain. Respond professionally to his email and cc your boss.

I'd say keep your boss up to date on any dealings you have with this guy so your boss knows you're doing your job and can defend you if needed, and you'll be fine. Also, take none of it personally, because it has little to do with you and everything to do with him. Not taking it personally keeps you from losing your temper with him at work, which will get you ito trouble every time.

This guy is already digging his own hole, people like that always do. If he's dealing with you this way, he's probably dealing with others the same way, and making all kinds of complaints and problems for his own management, and that won't last forever

...there's nothing a good 'banning' won't fix. It's easy as dirt under the rug.

Last time I checked people get themselves banned. You can take your sacrastic attitude and shove it Z. I won't be reading your response either.

Yal, is that a real book!? LOL.

Z is trying to go where a certain other person went and thus got himself banned.

I've sent boys younger than you to the gas chamber Danny. I didn't want to; I felt I owed it to them.
