5 minutes on a good day. 10 minutes on a really bad day. I usually come home for lunch of stir fried veggies in my wok. I logon here and see whazzup, then check a couple of newspapers and go back to work. 45 minutes, +/-.

On bad days I sit at my desk trying to figure-out how to keep people working on a shrinking budget. We-ve been flat for 5 years despite COLA's coming out of operating budget. Wont be long until we have money to turn on the lights, sit at our desks and fill out a time sheet and that's it. Been getting a lot of those bad days since 9/11. It's going to get very, very bad later this year. Which mom am I gonna boot out of here?

I'm increasingly thinking about applying with DoD or CIA for a lateral. Talk about growing budgets in my field, wow.

Sorry 'bout the whine. It's the wine.

My God that's insane. I'm going from the western burbs to the north shore. If you don't mind, where specifically do you go to/from?

boneheaddoctor 02-02-2005 10:16 AM

My commute is 16 miles each way into DC.........takes about 30 minutes on average. In nice weather. Has taken up to 3 hours thanks to idiots who don't know how to, yet insist upon driving in snow.

13 miles and 20 minutes (on a bad day) each way. All back streets, thank goodness. But it does get a bit worse each year. Seattle's filling up, and they're moving out our way.

99.5 Miles door to door

dodging deer and morons the whole way on 2 lane roads in western IL, usually takes me about 2 hours but has taken as long as 5.
I live in a rural area that has no real jobs available. Love the location and the house and I actually dont mind the drive that much. Little music, coffee and i'm OK.

I walk downstairs to my basement office. :D

KenP 02-02-2005 08:03 PM

68 miles each way. Leaving the house at 0445, I pull into the parking lot about 0630... if there are no accidents, bad weather, etc. So, about an hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours.
Coming home averages 2.5 to 3 hours... depending on time/traffic.

Two more years until I can stop this insanity...

Why is the budget shrinking?

Southeast subrubs to the Northwest suburbs. Frankfort (just south of Orland Park) to Hoffman Estates. the only day it took more than 2.5 hours was the day before Thanksgiving, everyone from WI was driving to the city, and it was snowing heavily. Left the office at 3:00, got home around 7:20

That is a CRUISE! I live right off Golf Rd. a couple of minutes west of Hoffman. I do not envy your commute. You should see if you can find a place in East Elgin. Tons of beautiful historical buildings, rent and cost of living is dirt cheap. There are definately some areas to avoid :mgwhore2: , but overall it's a great town. You'd be five minutes from work. Hell, you could take a second job and still have more time at home.

I have a second job as it is, but down here in the south subs. I work at the Tweeter Center (the music theatre). I'm a manager there, I'm a good guy to know ;) . I plan on moving to Crystal Lake next fall. Having just graduated, my savings are depleted. I am saving most all of what I make to put a nice down payment on a Condo/townhouse. I don't want to waste money on rent. I work for GE, we are right next to Sears on Beverly in the Prairie Stone Office Complex

Man, it is a small world. I live so close to your work. You absolutely have to try Emmett's Tavern and Brewing Company for lunch one day. It's right on 72 in downtown Dundee. Some of the hoppiest, most ass-kicking beers known to man and amazing food. Everything from burgers and pub fare to rack of lamb and some really exotic specials. Hell, if you're ever in the area around 7 pm, I'd definately buy you a pint up there.

Also kind of funny, I graduated from Crystal Lake central high school. Lived there from the time I was 8 until like 17. Crystal Lake is like what the whole free world would be doing on saturday night had the nazis won the war. Some cool stuff out there, but the overall attitudes of the people are terrible. It's like wannabe yuppies who can't necessarily afford to live out in Schaumburg, but still have to drive a Lexus (which they likely financed for six years). Very image conscious mentality. Going to the Best Buy or the grocery store on a Saturday afternoon is one of the most intriguing socialogical observations one can have in the far NW burbs.

I can't tell you how happy I am to be out of Chicago, though it'll always be a part of me. Winters, traffic, crime, boring landscape, oh and did I mention traffic? As much as I enjoyed the nightlife of Lincoln Park, Rush St., even the suburbs (Fitzgerald's, anyone?), the daily grind was pure misery. Also, there's no easy weekend escape without venturing to the airport. You can drive for 2 - 3 hours and still be in "Chicagoland". So where am I now? Chicago's biggest suburb -- Phoenix! :D

Diesel Power 02-04-2005 12:46 PM

50 miles one way. Takes me about an hour to get to work on the weekends, and as much as 1 hr 20 mins on the weekdays to get to work. I don't pay much attention to the home side, as I always find some diversion that keeps me from getting home untill several hours after I get off of work anyway. Lately that has been checking out brand new houses.

300sdlguy 02-04-2005 01:10 PM

46 miles each way...usually takes 45 minutes, but if there is an accident or construction it takes 1 to 2 hrs. I just listed my tunes or some talk radio.
