I took apart an HP Pavilion last year and reinstalled the hardware into a custom CPU case for my kid (glowing cathodes and such). The custom case already had a power supply, so I still have the old HP power unit.

Power supplies are a universal item...they occupy relatively the same amount of space and have the same connectors.

They come in various outputs (in watts). Check the rated output on your current one, and get one with the same or more rated power...especially MORE if you plan on adding any power-draining accessories in the future.

Stores like Fry's Electronics carry a whole variety for as low as $30. Lots of internet sites like the link below as well...

I did a replacement of a power supply for a Pavilion about 2 months ago. The form factor of the one I replaced was similar to an ATX design but only about 75% of the depth. The unique form factor required a call to HP for the part. Think it cost about $90 including 2nd day shipping. HP makes a lot of models with the Pavilion name on it. Not sure which form factor yours uses…..

We purchased an HP Pavillion from Costco 2 years ago. Had it for maybe a month when the power supply literally melted down, sending smoke boiling out of the case and filling my office with a dense acrid stench. Took it back and bought our current Toshiba laptop. Ain't going back to desktops ever again...

I have both and find the desktop much more convenient really. Mouse, number pad, 21" monitor, second hard drive for backups. To each his own -- they each have a following and a purpose.

I have a cordless keyboard and mouse. I hate large monitors, because it takes forever for the cursor to migrate across the great expanses--15" is large enough. I can backup my files with a 1GB thumb drive--I don't use much HD capacity.

I have a cordless mouse for my laptop. It works really nicely, but it goes through AA batteries like nobody's business.

Mine too--bummer huh? I've seen that the new versions have a rechargable docking station for the mouse. For some reason, my keyboard can go forever on a set of batteries, but the mouse just eats them for breakfast. Logitech.

Plantman, intermittent power and then power down can mean several things. You can also be overheating the processor and that will trip the thermal overload and the machine will power off to prevent the processor from becoming a door shim. Check the processor for dirt and dust accumulation. If it's dirty shoot it with some compressed air. It also could just be dying if the fan is cruddy and is not cooling properly. I have seen 20+ PS units burn out and they usually just POP and then stink from blown capacitors. Just be sure that you check the PS size before you go to compusa or frys or wherever you go. The HP, Dell, IBM machines often have custom designed PS units so it may not fit yours. The ones that stores have are generic "square" units that marginally vary in size although a 300-350w is usually the base generic size. If you have room for a generic power supply I would reccomend a dual fan version if one is available they last a little longer. Good luck.

for your power supply or any other computer needs there is none better than

www.newegg.com

fast, and I mean FAST delivery.. if they say 3 to 5 days it may arrive in just 2
nobody beats their prices (that I've found)

the computer I'm using now is one I built using all parts from NewEgg except the memory which I bought locally

I also have a "wish list" going etc. You can use Credit Card or Send them a Check.. read reviews from customers (geeks who have previously purchased the product) and you can determine if you want that part or choose another.

Happy Hunting!

I completly and totally agree!

Also, r+r on a power supply takes me about 2 minutes... its like 4 screws, and then about 4-8 connectors depending on your setup. very easy, anyone could do it.
