When my cheap toaster went out on me, I decided to research various brands of toasters. When I replace something I usually replace it with a better quality product. When I researched toasters I was looking for something that was built well and would last decades. I decided on a Dualit toaster - handbuilt in England. The Dualit toaster is considered the "Rolls Royce" of toasters.

I found a reasonabley priced Dualit toaster on E-bay. Once I got it I was amazed on its performance and the quality of the toast it produced. The unique design of the heating elements toasts less than 1/2 the time as my old cheap toaster. The toast seems to taste better because the center of the toast is soft while the outside is crunchy. One of the features I like is the removable crumb tray.

Most of my co-workers think I am nuts (as well as my family and many of you reading this thread) when I tell them how much better my toast comes out with my Dualit toaster. The one exception is a co-worker from England. She talks about how she grew up in England with a Dualit toaster and hasn't had any toaster even come close to a Dualit. I ended up obtaining a Dualit on E-bay for her as well. I noticed my oldest Son put butter on the toast before toasting it. I tried it and the butter baked in the toast - similar to garlic bread. Since there is a removable crumb tray any excess butter just dripped into the crumb tray.

Any of you have any experience with a Dualit toaster or other brand that you are impressed with? or should I be sent to the nut house?

The Dualit is a good example of British workmanship with it's partially cast aluminium housing,however the nichrome wire elements are in my opinion somewhat thin and prone to burn out.

Thru years of appliance collecting and repairing I can claim justly that the early clockwork Toastmasters and their modern TP 200's are quite reliable.

You're right, they are great.

We used to have an old one (probably 50s or 60s) that let the toast fall out the bottom and slide down a curve to a stop on either side of the unit. Toast never popped up, it popped down! But it worked great, complete with the old cloth wrapped cord.

I checked out the Toastmaster TP200 on their website, they are made about 20 minutes from my house. I like the ceramic elements and electronic controls. By comparison the Dualit has a manual timer which does not automatically compensate when toasting one after another. I have learned to set the timer a little bit less on the second batch. I do like the fact that the toast does not pop up after toasting on my Dualit. The bread stays a bit warmer sitting in the toaster. After having the manual lever feature to raise the toast it makes you wonder why other toasters automatically eject the toast when its done.

The Toastmaster TP200 2-slice toaster list price is $695 which is over 3 times the cost of a comparable Dualit toaster. Talk about sticker shock.

Does the bread toast differently in a Toastmaster then a typicall cheap toaster?

I purchased my Dualit toaster over 1 year ago on E-bay for $100 (new not used). I have the 2-slice vario model. Dualit came out with a "cheaper" line of toasters called the "Lite" models. With the vario models you can purchase a sandwich basket which allows you to heat up sandwiches, I havn't got one yet.

Lucas DID design this toaster, only thing was they were trying to make a table lamp and this was what it turned into

Ah yes – the politically correct toaster thread. Made me want to have a piece of toast and just had to look at what I had. Toastmaster model #1B9 – works great. Had one of those that slowly lower and raised the toast, but it didn’t last. I think the one I’m using is about 1940ish. Could this place get any more boring ??

I need to get my brother in here. He bought some fang-dangled expensive toaster a few years back, and I just had to roll my eyes and not say anything.

A good cracked wheat is my fav.
But just don't pre-butter your bread!

Ya know, the right steam iron could double as a toaster.
Just don't forget to turn off the steam.
And, you can pre-butter your toast with an iron, too!
