The G class is dead!

Look at what the idiots are doing to the G!

It is just a tarted up ML! A G class is a true off road vehical built like a tank and capible of going anywhere. It is in the same catigory as Humvee's, Toyota Land Cruisers, and Range Rovers.

However the new G is ment to appeal to people in cities that like SUV's. Just like the H2 they are ment to roll around on 20in wheels with TV's and subs stuck all over them.

It is ashame, I want to own a G one day, the current G55K is a wonderfull vehical. Although I would prefer one with a CDI engine and manual trans.

Oh well another good MB bites the dust.

They are just following the Toyota Land Cruisers and Range Rovers. Wandering if it still will be a military vehicle?

H-townbenzoboy 03-08-2005 12:20 AM

The current G-class is a modern classic. From the days of the W116s, W123s and W107s, to today's W220s, W211s, and W230s, this vehicle has been virtually unchanged. It's MB's last vestige of what quality and reliability used to look like. If they're going to replace the G with that, they might as well discontinue the whole G line. Or maybe, the W463 will continue to be manufactured for military operations while the new G will be too.

Are they sure thats the new G class?

DslBnz 03-08-2005 12:39 AM

Yup, that is definitely the new G.

And,....You still have faith in this company's styling trends? Even if their engines are bulletproof and powerful, what about the outer shells?

mike690003 03-08-2005 12:41 AM

Yeah, I wouldn't get too worked up. Spy shots are not always accurate. It might just be some M-class with a longer wheel base, aka 3 rows of seats. If MB does THAT to the G-class, something iss terribly wrong!

bobbyv 03-08-2005 01:49 AM

of course we have to remember that the original G was designed by Steyr Puch, an Austrian company, not by Mercedes-Benz (which also made the Pinzgauer).

I agree that there is still a place in this world for the original G. The Canadian military has recently purchased a number of these, especially fitted for military use.

The new G looks like a Nissan ... They should preserve the old G and give this new model a new moniker.

What if they do the same to the Unimog?

Are you serious? If that's the G, what's the ML?

I thought the G was guaranteed production until 2025?

Mark DiSilvestro 03-08-2005 11:40 AM

Ho hum! Another curvy, swoopy 'Designer' SUV, to ensure its' owner's bragging rights at the country club parking lot.
Perhaps MB dealers will sell 'factory approved' spinners for this one?

Happy Motoring, Mark

It was inevitable. At last we get the final nail into the old school Mercedes Benz coffin placed and driven home :(

The chapter ends.

cmon

Honestly, I do not think that they are going to change the G's styling at all. If you take a cruise over to the Mercedes Website , they show the new M class, which looks an awful like those spyshots. (But that is just me, and I hope I do not get grilled for this.)

Man oh man would a old GWagen with an OM617 and four or five speed be cool. This new one is hideous.

On a related note, does anyone remember reports by the Canadian military (who uses G-Wagens) that the actual floor of the G's would deteriorate quickly?

Another thumbs down on the new G-Class from me--the old one is perfect, the new one is horrendous--as long as a Suburban, three rows of seats, and massive power-like 400+hp. From what I hear, LOW RANGE IS AN OPTION!
By the way, the new Range Rover is not in the same category as this horrible G. It has more off-road capability than any other Range Rover before it, with Kevlar underside protection, 11.1" ground clearance, air suspension of course, cross-linked independent f/r suspension which, when linked, can act as an axle allow for zero unsprung weight and more articulation than any previous Range Rover. It is powered by the nice BMW 4.4 L V8, with only 282 hp and has been "Roverized" to handle extreme angles and water operation. 2-speed transfer case, Torsen center diff with VCU, and only a 112" wheelbase for good approach, departure, and breakover angles. 4-wheel ETC helps control side-side slippage. Plus basically nice styling, although not as good as the Classic or the P38.
