I'm still trying to decide which suits me best....

I never watch sports channels so those are of no interest to me...I gotta have my HBO......well when the leaves are out I will do it....in the winter a dish planted just about anywhere will work, not so in the summer.

I have the highest-speed Cox cable for the computer available and also use the TV. Cost is about $80/mo. Bought a router and set-up a LAN for my Macs at home. I have lost cable signal twice since I've had internet access (six years or so). I tried DSL but the wires in this house are so noisy it ain't worth it. I borrowed a TDR from work to see if I could track down problems and it was just too noisy to deal with. Cracked insulation everywhere and splices run-amuck. They tried boosting the signal but it didn't help, either. My cable is as fast as our T1's at work.

My brother has one of the satellite systems and likes it a lot (Kemah TX). Mother has it in North Louisiana and she hates it so badly that she's ready to go back to cable. I think its because it is just so different a paradigm.

The primary reason I keep cable is for the computer access. I have heard that the satellite systems are pretty kludgey (gotta tie-up a phone line to send while the satellite is used for receive). Once you have high speed it is just not possible to go back, so I keep cable.

BTW, my city-parish gov is considering going into direct competition with cable and phone service providers. The local gov has been stringing optical cables city-wide and are proposing to float a bond issue to pay for optical to the house and all the other infra-structure. Much as I'd like to tell Cox and phone company where to stuff their BS, I don't care for gov putting private enterprise out of business.

Anybody have experience with the local gov entering the domain?

Satellite is now two way high speed, so you don't have to tie up a phone line anymore. It's what I'm using at home, and have mixed feelings for it.

When it works, it works great. However, they have a "Fair Access Policy" that will throttle you down if you download more data than "they" deem appropriate. When they start doing this, the system starts screwing up, and we usually end up having to reset it, so that it'll resynch and work properly again. It's a PITA, but it's about the only option for broadband out here in the styx.

Right now, my neighbours son (read pet), is playing an online game, that really saps the b/w. Needless to say, we're having connectivity problems again. If you are wondering how I'm being affected by him, They are the ones with the system, and I'm paying part of the bill for connectivity, as our houses are networked together. (N.A.N)

Bot....I had the same problem when I got the DSL....just wouldn't work....then I ran CAT5 cable from the phone box on house to computer room...Haven't had a lick of trouble since.....the Station cable they used in 1963 when my house was built was just too crappy for DSL...I pay $89 for cable withj HBO being my only premium service...damned if I was paying THEM for internet too at $45 a month more.............

Faster than the LAN at work! You get 5 MIPS for around $33/mo, and 15 MIPS for $45/mo. They offered 30 MIPS for $200/mo

Verizon offers it here. I had CAT5 runs done when my house was under construction, so now I take full advantage of what it has to offer!

Since my home studio leaves little room for desktop peripherals, I picked up a salvaged 24-port industrial hub for $15 and mounted it onto one of my racks. Looks pretty cool, and the display actually shows usable info besides the typical blinking light during data transfer...
