I don't know what the SR18 is but at $1300, the SR8400 is pricey considering the output. I used to love Marantz and still have a 1060 console amplifier that works perfectly after 31 years. I kind of fell out of favor with them when SuperScope (Sony) bought them out. I'm sure it's a good unit though. In electronics you get what you pay for and you pay for what you get. Just remember the law of dimishing returns. There may be a better deal out there.

Marantz is no longer owned by Sony. It's a private company run in the tradition of Saul's original company.
I have a Model 19 and 250. http://us.marantz.com/Home/default.asp http://us.marantz.com/about/history.asp I love the gold colored equipment.

Marantz
I have only had a marantz dvd palyer. It broke after about 4 weeks of use. I would probially not buy another one, but I would buy another yamaha or onkyo. I bought a yamaha htr-5790 for a little over $1000 a year ago. THX and componenet switching, so it has alot a features for its price. This reciever can now be had on ebay for the mild price of $500. I think that it is well worth the price. Another good brand is onkyo. It was feature packed at the time, and I got it for a mere $50 when wards was closing. So if you had good expieriences with marantz, get it. If you have not, look for something that has good bang for buck.

I have an older Marantz reciever, great piece of equipment. But don't know anything about the new stuff. I had an Onkyo reciever, and it was pretty decent. I like my current Harmon-Kardon better though.

One of my very first reveivers was a Marantz and that's quite some time back. As a subscriber of Sound & Vision and the previous Stereo Review for over 25 years, and as a stereo buff, I do know a bit more sound than the average person. Marantz is not a popular brand has limited distribution. That means you will not get much discount from its dealers Of course this has nothing to do with the quality of Marantz. It's just that you will likely to pay a significant premium for Marantz compared to other more popular brands. There are many good receivers out there that offer a better value than Marantz Unless you have already done so, I would suggest that you do some comparison shoppingby looking specifically at the RMS power ratings, versatile digital input and out, warranty, the sound quality, etc. And if you listen to FM frequently, look for the low signal capture ratio, multipath interference rejection, stereo separation, etc.
