I can't wait to get out of college in 3-4 years. No one could pay me enough to write any more _^&*(%^%^&*(^(_*%^%^(_*%^(_* papers. Stay up until the wee hours of the morning studying stupid ^**(^*^*^*(&^*(_&^*(_&^*(^(*^*(^(* crap. Or reading long and winded books that I don't want to.
I am a good student I got a 3.0 last semester and I spent more time under my SDL then studying. I just hate school and can not imagin going back. I have never liked school though it bores me, my mom said that even when I was very little I hated it. I would rather make money then study, that interests me. The higher the $$$ the more my interest becomes. However history, english, and business are ok classes.

Well said. I have to say that I am not as gramatically skilled as others, but if it bothered me to read errors in peoples stuff I would have to turn the computer off. The message is what counts, if you write it well enough that it is understood Job well done (business aside). Paul X.

I agree with BOTS, if you are merely seeking education,
SEEK a good school, i.e. CONSERVATIVE Liberal schools dont even hardly allow you to challenge their thinking. They will pollute your mind, a conservative school of today would have been considered moderate 40 years ago. |

What's a Liberal school? Do you mean Liberal Arts schools? Are there any Conservative Arts schools out there?

hehe, ya know, I was just thinking...it's a bit funny. to reiterate what I've said earlier, to determine my english-speaking competence or my intelligence based on my style of online communication is not only asisnine but absurd. pffft, does it look like I'm applying for a job here? no. as it is in real life, there is what we call discourse communities in "virtual life" (e.g., online discussion rooms). I sometimes deliberately and accidently butcher the english language when I am among friends; however, in a professional or formal setting, that is not the case. the same applies with written communication. when I engage in online communication, as I'm doing now, I don't try to impress a readership that really doesn't care much about grammar as it does about understanding what I'm trying to say--typos, grammar mistakes, poor mechanics, capitalization, and all! now, having said that, I think it's a bit absurd to clobber people with yer grammar baton. when I enter the virtual world, I leave my grammar police badge at home. now, if we're speaking about academic writing, writing that will have a diverse educated readership, or business communication, then I put on my badge and assume the role of grammar nazi! enough said.
keep in mind that how one speaks isn't an indicator of one's intelligence. I think it's certain people who make grammar geeks look bad...like *********s. but you know who are the biggest *******s? those people who think they know english grammar well but really don't! they are the ones who criticize other people's grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. online and off in a condescending, smarter-than-thou sort of way. what's bad and quite pathetic is when their grammar is not so great, yet just because they took a course in writing they think they know it all. or sometimes they will pick on an undercover grammarian, and when he or she reveals the official shiny grammar badge of doom, they suddenly shut the **** up! sorry, but to assume my business writing is the same as my online writing (or typing) not only makes you look bad but also stupid. no offense to anyone who may feel this post is directed at them. and thank you for the encouragement and kind words of some here. |

Frosty has so much to learn about people and life. If he hadn't pointed out that he was going to get a Masters in English, I would have never commented on his grammar. Or for that matter commented at all. I would have just formed my impression of this unknown person based on his posting style. The impression would be sloppy, gen -x, and formally un-educated. I am not saying this is factual, but it is the impression I received.
I don't buy the AC-DC thing either. Lazy grammar on-line versus perfect grammar off-line. Nah. I suspect it is a generational thing. That's how people communicate on-line. Kind of scary really. I'm also betting that Frosty would not buy the argument that first impressions are formed in the under 2 minutes. How you shake hands matters. How you dress matters. How you speak matters. How you write matters. If you don't really have the drive to succeed in whatever you are trying to achieve, then they really don't matter. The world is full of people who never figured this out. Frosty, might want to cease worrying about whether I was trying to somehow put him down, and , instead consider whether the comments might be something to think about. At some point he will encounter someone that controls his paycheck who may make similar blunt comments. Listening to people who are older, wiser, and more experienced is a great way to grow. Once I got over my long haired hippy days, I figured that out. I've had some great mentors along the way, who had the courage to tell me what I needed to correct. I felt bad when I heard it, but after thinking about it realized they were generally correct. We can't see ourselves. My observation is that most people are very afraid that they will hurt someone's feelings by being honest. Instead, they do the what's now known at Politically Correct thing. Many people are eventually hurt by superiors not telling them truth. Good luck, Steve |

The truth often stings. If I had an opportunity to earn something for my time, I would gladly do the research to prove my point. A student, from India I think, challenged his professors stance that the war in Iraq was evil, and the teacher didnt grade his report on style, grammar, etc, but on the fact that the guy simply opposed the professors pov, and required the student, under threat of expulsion and deportation, to seek psychiatric help. Yea, gotta love them open minded liberals. Oh, and the stories like this, the people line up on the radio to tell such personal experiences, its not out of the norm anymore. |

I always get a laugh out of folks who preach authoritarian grammar. My experience is that these folks typically not only lack a life but they also lack any sense of what’s important in life. I remember during one of the Medieval lit classes I took, one of the students, a prissy young woman in her early 20s, blurted out that the author of the story we were reviewing didn’t use grammar very well. The prof shook her head and said that she had to wonder not only how these folks could have lived a life but how civilization ever made it past the 8th century with that shortcoming. I laughed so hard I had to leave the room.
Some folks see the importance in learning, while others are so sensitive to grammar that they wrestle vainly with using commas correctly. Oh well. One of the greatest elements of our culture is that it offers places for folks with goals, folks with vision, and secretaries, too!

Another example of the "Dumbing Down of America". When in doubt just lower the standards. Anything goes. Punctuation has no purpose. Capitalization has no purpose. Spell it however you feel like spelling it.
2 x 4 = whatever you feel the answer should be. Give me a break. No more posts from me on this thread. Too depressing. Steve |
