I Love The Dmv !!!

I went to the Wisconsin Dept of Motor Vehicles yesterday to register my 300D.
It opens at 9 am and I got there at 9:15. There were about 25 people there already. They had 6 lanes open, so "no problem" I think to myself. At 9:30 four lanes close and they go on a cofee break. AFTER THIRTY MINUTES OF WORK!!!
Then at 9:45 two return and I think "cool four lanes open now" After the two take care of their current customers then they go on break, so now it's back to 2 lanes open. I left at 10:20, not too bad for the DMV but still.......
Is this the way the DMV is everywhere??

Since most non-managerial jobs in state governments are based on a wage and promotion system that does not reward service or innovation, but longevity, what incentive is there to provide "service" as opposed to just showing up, breathing, punching out, and collecting retirement when you've served your sentence?

I was dumbfounded a couple of years ago when I went to my local DMV and was in the midst of a 60+ minute wait for a title transfer. Granted, 60 minutes is not bad for a DMV visit, but this is in podunksmalltown, IL... What confounded me the most was that one lady took a call there at the desk, during her shift, and proceeded to describe a washing machine she was trying to sell in the classifieds of the local paper. She not only was on the clock while doing this (she took a "break" later, after she hung up!), but stopped assisting the person she had been helping in order to take the call, which lasted for several minutes. It was kind of surreal... you'd think she'd at least have the tact to either finish the paperwork she was doing while she talked, or retire to the back room and make the conversation a little more discreet.

Well, I know I'm spoiled. I've repeatedly walked into the auto registration office, and back out inside of 5 minutes. I can count the number of times on one hand when there was more than two people in that room.

There's only one person that runs the place at a time, and the room will hold maybe a maximum of 4 to 5 people - all standing.

Hey, I just got back from TX. Flew in to Dallas, drove to Wichita Falls, then back past Ray Roberts Lake, and flew out of Dallas. We ate BBQ 6 times in our 4 days there. Awesome stuff!!!

Absolutely, I wish we had a H&W Foods megamart here in Honolulu and a 70MPH speed limit. They can keep the armadillos that wander about early in the morning when you're trying to get to the airport out of Wimberly.

Reminds me of the scene in "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" when the Steve Martin character is trying to tell the rental-car clerk lady that he was dropped off in the middle of an empty parking lot and had to walk back to the terminal. She simply ignores him and keeps gossiping on the phone with one of her friends.

Great scene!
